Song: Flowers of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Cunda Therāpadāna

[Verse 1]

In the days of Buddha Siddhattha,
A heart of faith began to shine.
Cunda offered fragrant jasmine flowers,
With joy and love in his heart and mind.

[Verse 2]
The flowers rose and formed a canopy,
A blessing beneath the open sky.
The Buddha spoke of deeds and destiny,
And how good actions never truly die.

[Chorus]
Flowers of faith, an offering of love,
Goodness remains through the passing years.
Gratitude guides us, wisdom lights the way,
A peaceful heart can overcome its fears.

Give with kindness, live with truth,
Let compassion guide the things you do.
Do not stop with offerings alone,
Walk the path until your mind is free.

[Verse 3]
Cunda served his brother Sāriputta,
With gratitude and a faithful heart.
When his elder brother passed away,
He honoured him with a sacred offering.

[Bridge]
From flowers offered in a distant age,
To wisdom found through meditation.
He saw the truth, released all bonds,
And reached the end of liberation.

[Final Chorus]
Flowers of faith, an offering of love,
The heart grows wise through what we do.
Generosity and gratitude,
Can lead the mind to peace and truth.

Cunda Thera’s Story: From Offering Flowers to Attaining Arahantship

The story of Cunda Thera highlights the value of faith, generosity, gratitude, service to the Sangha, and the practice of insight meditation leading to liberation.

The Cunda Therāpadāna, found in Book 32 of the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, U pāli Vagga, tells the story of a disciple who offered flowers to Buddha Siddhattha with a joyful and devoted heart. The Buddha foretold that he would eventually become a disciple of Gotama Buddha and attain arahantship.

1. The Story in the Pali Canon

In the time of Buddha Siddhattha, the person who would later become Cunda Thera prepared a special floral offering decorated with jasmine flowers. After completing the offering, he presented it to the Buddha and also offered the remaining flowers.

He made these offerings with sincere faith and joy.

Buddha Siddhattha, surrounded by enlightened disciples and seated among the Sangha, foretold the results of this wholesome deed. He declared that the donor would be reborn in heavenly realms, enjoy celestial happiness, and experience various forms of prosperity in future lives.

The prophecy mentioned that he would enjoy heavenly sovereignty 74 times, become a king 300 times, and become a universal monarch 75 times.

Eventually, he would be born into a Brahmin family as the son of Vanganta and Sari, and become a disciple of Gotama Buddha under the name Cūḷacunda. The prophecy stated that he would attain arahantship while still a novice, eradicate all mental defilements, and pass into final Nibbāna.

The verses also describe his service to the Buddha, to virtuous disciples, and to his elder brother, the Venerable Sāriputta.

After Sāriputta passed away, Cunda placed his elder brother’s relics in a bowl and presented them to the Buddha. The Buddha received the relics with both hands and declared Sāriputta’s status as a chief disciple.

At the conclusion of his account, Cunda Thera declared that his mind was fully liberated, his faith was firmly established, and all mental defilements had been eradicated. He had realised the four analytical knowledges, the eight liberations, and the six supernormal knowledges. He had completed the task of the Buddha’s dispensation.

2. The Life of Cunda Thera According to the Commentary

The commentary explains that Cunda Thera had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas, preparing the conditions for his eventual attainment of Nibbāna.

During the time of Buddha Siddhattha, he was born into a wealthy family. After reaching adulthood, he developed faith in the Buddha’s teaching and commissioned a valuable offering made of gold, adorned with the seven precious substances and covered with jasmine flowers.

When the offering was presented, the flowers rose into the air and formed a canopy. Buddha Siddhattha then prophesied that he would become a disciple named Cunda in the dispensation of Gotama Buddha.

After passing away, he was reborn in celestial realms and enjoyed heavenly happiness. He also experienced prosperity in the human world according to his past kamma.

In the era of Gotama Buddha, he was born into a Brahmin family as the son of Rūpasārī and the younger brother of the Venerable Sāriputta.

As he grew older, he recognised the disadvantages of household life and the benefits of renunciation. He therefore ordained under the guidance of his elder brother, Sāriputta, and practised insight meditation. According to the commentary, he attained arahantship after a relatively short period of practice.

The commentary also highlights his gratitude towards Sāriputta. After his elder brother passed away, Cunda respectfully cared for his relics and presented them to the Buddha. The Buddha accepted the relics and acknowledged Sāriputta as a chief disciple.

Later, Cunda Thera recalled his past deeds with joy and recited the verses preserved in the Cunda Therāpadāna.

Song: The Sandalwood Offering Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Subhadda Therāpadāna

[Verse 1]

When Padumuttara's final day drew near,
The world stood still in reverence and prayer.
Subhadda brought a sandalwood casket,
With fragrant flowers and a heart sincere.

[Verse 2]
The flowers may fade, the years may pass,
But wholesome deeds are never lost.
Through changing lives and distant worlds,
The seeds of goodness bear their fruit.

[Chorus]
A sandalwood offering, a heart full of light,
Faith is the beginning, wisdom is the way.
Do not stop at worship, do not stop at prayer,
Let the Dhamma guide you every day.

Speak with kindness, let no harsh words remain,
Every action has its consequence.
From offering flowers in a distant life,
To freedom from defilements and pain.

[Verse 3]
Though careless words may bring regret,
A wiser heart can still arise.
It is never too late to walk the path,
With truth and effort as your guide.

[Bridge]
Generosity, virtue, calm, and insight,
A steady mind that sees things clear.
Release attachment, overcome desire,
And let the end of suffering draw near.

[Final Chorus]
A sandalwood offering, a heart full of light,
Faith becomes practice, wisdom becomes peace.
The greatest gift is a mind set free,
Where all defilements cease.

Subhadda Thera’s Story — From an Offering in a Sandalwood Casket to the Attainment of Arahantship

The story of Subhadda Thera illustrates the power of sincere faith, the consequences of wholesome and unwholesome actions, and the importance of practising the Dhamma until liberation is attained.

The Subhadda Therāpadāna, found in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Book 32 of the Pali Canon, tells the story of a man who offered a sandalwood casket filled with fragrant agarwood and jasmine flowers to the Buddha Padumuttara as the Buddha was approaching his final passing away.

1. The Story in the Pali Canon

During the time of the Buddha Padumuttara, many people and celestial beings gathered to pay their final respects as the Buddha was preparing to enter Parinibbāna.

Among them was a devotee who filled a sandalwood casket with fragrant agarwood and jasmine flowers. With a joyful and faithful heart, he offered it to the Buddha.

The Buddha recognised his intention and predicted that this wholesome deed would bring him fortunate rebirths in the celestial realms, including the Tusita and Nimmānaratī heavens. In a future life, during the dispensation of Gotama Buddha, he would approach the Buddha, ask questions about the Dhamma, receive instruction, become a monk, and ultimately attain the state free from all mental defilements.

The verses also recount that he later honoured the stupa of Buddha Padumuttara with a beautiful banner. In another lifetime, during the time of Buddha Kassapa, he spoke improperly to the chief disciple named Tissa. This part of the account reminds readers that unwholesome speech also has consequences.

Eventually, during the time of Gotama Buddha, he received ordination at the Sal Grove near the place where the Buddha was about to pass away. According to his verses, his going forth, higher ordination, and Parinibbāna all took place on that same day.

Subhadda Thera declared that he had realised the four analytical knowledges, the eight liberations, and the six supernormal knowledges. He had completed the task of the Buddha’s dispensation.

2. The Life of Subhadda Thera According to the Commentary

The commentary provides additional details about his past lives. It says that he had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas, aspiring towards final liberation.

During the time of Buddha Padumuttara, he was born into a wealthy family and developed faith in the Triple Gem. When he saw the Buddha resting on the final couch before Parinibbāna and witnessed the gathering of celestial beings, he was filled with devotion and made offerings of fragrant flowers.

After passing away, he enjoyed celestial happiness in the Tusita realm and later experienced human existence.

In the time of Gotama Buddha, he was born into another prosperous family. Although he recognised the disadvantages of sensual pleasures, he did not meet the Buddha until the final period of the Buddha’s life.

He approached the Buddha while the Blessed One was resting on the final couch at the Sal Grove. He received ordination, attained arahantship, and passed into Parinibbāna on that same day.

The commentary also explains that the expression “son born of the Buddha’s heart” refers to a disciple who receives the Buddha’s teaching and attains arahantship, not to a biological son.

3. Important Dhamma Teachings

  1. Sincere faith: The value of an offering lies not merely in its material worth but in the purity and sincerity of the intention behind it.

  2. Generosity and wisdom: Giving develops selflessness, but spiritual growth must continue through morality, concentration, and wisdom.

  3. The law of kamma: Wholesome and unwholesome actions have consequences. The story includes both an act of worship and an instance of harmful speech.

  4. Right Speech: We should avoid insulting, slandering, or speaking carelessly about others. Speech should be truthful, kind, beneficial, and appropriate.

  5. Diligent practice: It is never too late to begin developing the mind. Sincere effort can lead to profound spiritual transformation.

  6. Learning through questions: Subhadda approached the Buddha and asked questions. This illustrates the importance of investigating the truth with wisdom rather than relying on blind belief.

  7. The ultimate goal: The highest purpose of Buddhist practice is the ending of mental defilements and attachment, leading to liberation from suffering.

4. Applying the Teachings Today

The story can guide modern life in several ways:

  • In family life, practise generosity and speak with kindness.

  • In society, respect people of virtue and resolve disagreements through reason and compassion.

  • In education, ask meaningful questions and seek understanding.

  • In professional life, act honestly and avoid damaging others through careless speech.

  • In spiritual development, cultivate generosity, morality, concentration, and wisdom.

Central message: The sandalwood casket and flowers were external offerings. The deeper offering is the transformation of one’s own mind through generosity, right speech, wisdom, and the practice of the Dhamma until suffering is overcome.

Song: The Path of Dhamma Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna

[Intro]

In ancient times, a heart believed,
A noble gift, a path conceived.
A place to walk, a place to pray,
A path of wisdom along the way.

[Verse 1]

To Buddha Atthadassī, wise and kind,
A devoted heart prepared a shrine.
A path of bricks, so strong and long,
A peaceful place where minds grow strong.

Five cubits high, one hundred long,
A place for meditation, calm and strong.
With faith and love, the path was made,
A timeless gift that would never fade.

[Chorus]

Build the path, illuminate the mind,
Let wisdom and compassion shine.
Step by step, with mindful care,
Find the peace that waits within.

Build the path for all to see,
A gift of love for humanity.
Though the road may stretch so far,
With Dhamma, we know who we are.

[Verse 2]

The Buddha blessed the gift with grace,
And held the sand within His hands.
He spoke of merit yet to come,
Through countless lives beneath the sun.

Through heavenly worlds and human birth,
He journeyed on across the earth.
When Buddha Gotama came to be,
He joined the path to set him free.

[Bridge]

Mindfulness in every stride,
Perseverance as our guide.
Concentration, wisdom bright,
Lead the heart beyond the night.

[Final Chorus]

Build the path, illuminate the mind,
Let wisdom and compassion shine.
Step by step, with mindful care,
Find the freedom waiting there.

Build the path for all to see,
A gift of love for humanity.
Beyond all wealth and worldly fame,
Nibbāna is the highest aim.

[Outro]

One path was built, one seed was sown,
A gift whose goodness still has grown.
May every step in life we take,
Bring peace to all for Dhamma's sake.

Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera: The Gift of a Walking Meditation Path and the Path to Liberation

1. Background and Story in the Tipiṭaka

The Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna appears in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Book 32 of the Pali Canon, in the Upāli Vagga, Discourse No. 48.

It tells the story of a devoted disciple who constructed a walking meditation path and offered it to Buddha Atthadassī.

According to his account, in a distant past, he had a walking meditation path built with bricks as an offering to Buddha Atthadassī, the Great Sage and Supreme Guide of the world.

The path was beautifully constructed, five cubits high and one hundred cubits long. It was a pleasant place, suitable for meditation and spiritual cultivation.

When Buddha Atthadassī accepted the offering, He took some sand in His hand and made a prediction concerning the merits of the donor.

The Buddha declared that through the offering of the sand and the well-constructed walking path, the donor would enjoy great prosperity, including the Seven Treasures and divine sovereignty among the gods for three aeons, surrounded by celestial nymphs.

After returning to the human world, he would become a regional king and would become a universal monarch three times.

The venerable elder later declared that throughout eighteen hundred aeons since performing that meritorious deed, he had never experienced an unfortunate destination.

Ultimately, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. He declared that he had completed the task of the Buddha's teachings.

This account illustrates the value of generosity that supports meditation and spiritual development.

2. The Biography of Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera

According to the commentary on the Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna, the venerable elder had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas over many lifetimes.

His offering during the time of Buddha Atthadassī

During the dispensation of Buddha Atthadassī, he was born into a family and developed faith in the Buddha's teachings as he grew older.

With sincere devotion, he constructed a walking meditation path for the Buddha. The path was built with bricks on a raised foundation and covered with beautiful white sand resembling pearls.

It was not merely a beautiful structure, but a place suitable for walking meditation, mindfulness, and mental cultivation.

The Buddha's acceptance and prediction

After accepting the walking path, Buddha Atthadassī provided spiritual encouragement to the donor and predicted that he would become a disciple of the future Buddha Gotama.

This prediction reflected the spiritual significance of his meritorious deed and its connection with his future attainment.

His journey through different existences

As a result of this wholesome deed, he experienced happiness among celestial beings and human beings in successive existences.

When Buddha Gotama arose in the world, he was reborn into a family, developed faith in the Dhamma, and entered the Buddhist monastic order.

His attainment of arahantship

After ordination, he devoted himself to spiritual practice and soon attained arahantship, becoming free from mental defilements.

He became known as Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera, a name associated with his previous offering of a walking meditation path.

Later, when he recollected his former meritorious deed, he felt deep joy and recited verses describing its results.

3. Seven Important Buddhist Teachings

1. Generosity (Dāna)

Constructing a walking meditation path for the Buddha represents generosity that creates lasting benefits. Giving can include material possessions, knowledge, opportunities, and public facilities.

2. Faith (Saddhā)

The elder expressed his devotion to Buddha Atthadassī through meaningful action. True faith inspires wholesome deeds.

3. Effort (Viriya)

Walking meditation cultivates perseverance and diligence. It helps overcome laziness and strengthens commitment to spiritual development.

4. Mindfulness (Sati)

Walking meditation trains practitioners to remain aware of bodily movements, including standing, lifting the feet, stepping forward, and placing the feet down.

5. Concentration (Samādhi)

A suitable walking meditation environment supports mental calmness and concentration, providing a foundation for insight and wisdom.

6. Karma and Its Results (Kamma)

The elder described the wholesome results of constructing the meditation path. His account illustrates the relationship between intentional actions and their consequences.

7. Wisdom and Nibbāna

The highest goal is not worldly prosperity or celestial happiness, but liberation from mental defilements and suffering.

4. The Importance of Walking Meditation

Walking meditation (Caṅkama) is a Buddhist meditation practice in which practitioners walk back and forth mindfully, observing bodily movements and mental states.

Its benefits include:

  • Developing perseverance and patience.

  • Strengthening mindfulness of bodily movements.

  • Cultivating concentration.

  • Supporting insight into the nature of existence.

  • Complementing seated meditation practice.

Therefore, constructing a walking meditation path is a meaningful way to support Buddhist spiritual practice.

5. Lessons for Modern Society

The story of Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera offers valuable lessons for contemporary society.

Education: Building libraries, learning centers, and educational facilities creates opportunities for future generations.

Public health: Providing parks, exercise areas, and peaceful public spaces supports physical and mental well-being.

Buddhism: Constructing meditation halls, monasteries, and walking meditation paths helps people access mindfulness and wisdom.

Leadership: Good leaders should create environments that support learning, personal development, and the well-being of their employees.

Technology and Artificial Intelligence: Developing educational platforms and AI systems that make knowledge and Dhamma accessible to more people can serve the common good when guided by responsibility and ethical principles.

6. Conclusion

The Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna demonstrates that generosity can extend beyond giving material possessions. It can also mean creating spaces and opportunities that support the spiritual development of others.

Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera constructed a walking meditation path for Buddha Atthadassī, demonstrating his devotion and commitment to the cultivation of wisdom.

His story reminds us that creating an environment for spiritual practice is itself a meaningful contribution to society.

The central message: Those who create a place for Dhamma may help countless others develop mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom on their journey toward liberation.

Song: The Gift of a Bed, The Path to Freedom Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Sayanadāyaka Therāpadāna

[Intro]

Beyond the years, beyond the past,
A faithful heart made goodness last.
A simple gift, a noble deed,
A seed of wisdom planted deep.

[Verse 1]

To Buddha Siddhattha, kind and wise,
He offered a bed of precious design.
With fine cloth laid upon its frame,
He gave with love, without a claim.

The Buddha accepted with gentle grace,
Then rose and ascended into space.
A humble gift, a heart sincere,
A timeless lesson we hold dear.

[Chorus]

Give with love, give with grace,
Let compassion light the way.
Do not wait for another day,
Let kindness guide what you do today.

Give without expecting reward,
Walk the path of the Dhamma's light.
Through generosity and wisdom,
May we find eternal peace inside.

[Verse 2]

Through many lives, the blessings grew,
The fruits of giving came to fruition.
He became a mighty king one day,
King Varuṇadeva, rich in every way.

Yet worldly power could never be
The final goal of his destiny.
He left the throne, embraced the Way,
And practiced insight day by day.

[Bridge]

Fourfold wisdom, clear and bright,
Eight liberations shining light.
Six higher knowledges revealed,
The wounds of suffering finally healed.

[Final Chorus]

Give with love, give with grace,
Let compassion fill this place.
Wealth may fade and kingdoms fall,
But wisdom shines beyond them all.

Give with kindness, walk with care,
Let the Dhamma lead us there.
From generosity to wisdom's light,
May freedom be our final sight.

[Outro]

A bed was given, a seed was sown,
A path to freedom fully grown.
The greatest gift that life can bring,
Is liberation from everything.

The Story of Venerable Sayanadāyaka Thera: The Offering of a Bed to Buddha Siddhattha

1. Background and Story in the Tipiṭaka

The Sayanadāyaka Therāpadāna appears in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Book 32 of the Pali Canon, in the Upāli Vagga, Discourse No. 47.

It tells the story of a meritorious offering made by a devoted individual who later became Venerable Sayanadāyaka Thera.

According to his account, in a distant past, he offered an excellent bed, beautifully covered with fine cloth, to Buddha Siddhattha, a compassionate and steadfast Fully Enlightened One.

The Buddha accepted the bed as a proper offering. After receiving it, He rose from the bed and ascended into the sky.

The venerable elder later recalled that this offering had been made ninety-four eons ago. As a result of this meritorious deed, he stated that he had never experienced an unfortunate destination.

Furthermore, fifty-one eons ago, he was reborn as a universal monarch named Varuṇadeva, who possessed the Seven Treasures and commanded a mighty army.

Ultimately, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. He declared that he had completed the task of the Buddha's teachings.

This account illustrates the significance of generosity, faith, wholesome intentions, and spiritual development.

2. The Biography of Venerable Sayanadāyaka Thera

According to the commentary on the Sayanadāyaka Therāpadāna, the venerable elder had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas over many lifetimes.

His offering during the time of Buddha Siddhattha

During the dispensation of Buddha Siddhattha, he was born into a family and, upon reaching maturity, developed deep faith in the Buddha's teachings.

He constructed a beautiful bed as an offering to the Buddha. According to the commentary, the bed was made using ivory and decorated with valuable and exquisite coverings.

Buddha Siddhattha graciously accepted the offering out of compassion for the donor.

The fruits of generosity

Through this wholesome deed, he experienced celestial and human prosperity in subsequent existences.

In another lifetime, he became King Varuṇadeva, a universal monarch endowed with the Seven Treasures and great military strength.

Ordination and enlightenment

During the dispensation of a later Buddha, he was born into a respectable family. As he grew older, he developed faith in the Buddha's teachings and renounced worldly life.

After becoming a monk, he practiced insight meditation (Vipassanā). Before long, he attained arahantship and became free from mental defilements.

His name, Sayanadāyaka, reflects his former meritorious deed of offering a bed to the Buddha.

The commentary explains that one day he recollected his past actions, felt joyful, and recited the verses describing his previous meritorious conduct.

3. Six Important Buddhist Teachings

1. Generosity (Dāna)

Offering a bed to the Buddha demonstrates the virtue of giving. Generosity includes sharing material possessions, knowledge, time, and abilities for the benefit of others.

2. Good Intention (Cetanā)

The value of an offering depends greatly on the intention behind it. Giving with a sincere and compassionate heart creates wholesome karma.

3. Faith in the Triple Gem (Saddhā)

The elder expressed his faith through action. True faith should inspire people to perform good deeds and follow the path of Dhamma.

4. Karma and Its Results (Kamma)

Wholesome actions produce results according to causes and conditions. However, worldly prosperity is not the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice.

5. Insight Meditation (Vipassanā)

The commentary explains that the elder practiced insight meditation after ordination and attained arahantship. Generosity can support spiritual development, but liberation requires wisdom and diligent practice.

6. Nibbāna as the Highest Goal

Although he had experienced great worldly prosperity, the elder ultimately achieved the highest spiritual goal: liberation from defilements and suffering.

4. Spiritual Attainments

The venerable elder declared that he had attained:

  • Four Analytical Knowledges (Paṭisambhidā): Analytical understanding of meaning, Dhamma, language, and eloquence.

  • Eight Liberations (Vimokkha): Eight modes of spiritual liberation.

  • Six Higher Knowledges (Abhiññā): Supernormal powers, divine hearing, knowledge of others' minds, recollection of past lives, divine eye, and the destruction of mental intoxicants.

These attainments demonstrate the profound development of wisdom and spiritual understanding.

5. Lessons for Modern Society

The story of Venerable Sayanadāyaka Thera offers meaningful lessons for contemporary society.

  • Daily life: Giving does not require great wealth. Even small acts of kindness can make a difference.

  • Leadership: Good leaders should provide appropriate welfare and support for their employees.

  • Education: Sharing knowledge and creating educational opportunities are valuable forms of generosity.

  • Technology and AI: Artificial intelligence should be developed to benefit humanity, promote fairness, and share knowledge responsibly.

  • Personal development: Generosity should go hand in hand with mindfulness and wisdom, helping people overcome attachment to wealth, status, and recognition.

6. Conclusion

The Sayanadāyaka Therāpadāna teaches that generosity is a meaningful foundation for spiritual development.

The offering of a bed to Buddha Siddhattha represents a sincere act of devotion and compassion. Yet the ultimate achievement of the venerable elder was not worldly wealth or royal power, but the attainment of arahantship.

The central message is that true generosity begins with a compassionate heart and reaches its highest fulfillment through wisdom and liberation.

Song: The Lotus of Devotion Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Padumacchadaniya Thera Apadāna

[Intro]

In a distant age, beyond our time,
A Buddha's light continued to shine.
Though Buddha Vipassī passed away,
Faith remained to light the way.

[Verse 1]

A lotus flower, pure and bright,
Was offered with a heart of light.
Beside the pyre, with reverence deep,
A sacred promise he would keep.

He raised a canopy in the sky,
A sign of honor lifted high.
Though the Buddha had passed away,
His Dhamma still would light the way.

[Chorus]

Oh, lotus flower of devotion,
A symbol of a faithful heart.
A simple act of love and kindness,
Can be where greater journeys start.

Oh, canopy of sacred wisdom,
Let the light of Dhamma shine.
Beyond all wealth and worldly power,
May we reach the peace divine.

[Verse 2]

Through many lives, the blessings grew,
With wholesome deeds and purpose true.
He ruled a kingdom, great and wide,
Yet sought the truth beyond its pride.

He left the world to seek the Way,
And practiced Dhamma day by day.
Through wisdom, effort, peace, and grace,
He reached the end of suffering's race.

[Bridge]

Flowers fade as seasons turn,
Worldly treasures rise and burn.
But wisdom lights the path ahead,
Beyond the fears that life has spread.

[Final Chorus]

Oh, lotus flower of devotion,
A symbol of a faithful heart.
Let every good deed guide our footsteps,
And give our lives a noble start.

Oh, canopy of sacred wisdom,
May compassion fill the land.
With faith, with wisdom, and with effort,
Let us walk the path to peace.

[Outro]

One lotus flower, one act of love,
A humble offering rising above.
The highest gift, the final goal,
Is freedom for the human soul.

1. The Story of Venerable Padumacchadaniya Thera: A Devotee Who Offered a Lotus Flower and a Canopy in Honor of the Buddha

The story of Venerable Padumacchadaniya Thera appears in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Book 32 of the Pali Canon, in the Upāli Vagga, Discourse No. 46.

His account illustrates the power of faith, generosity, reverence, and the accumulation of wholesome deeds on the path toward liberation.

According to his account, in a distant past, when the Buddha Vipassī had attained final Nibbāna, a great assembly of people carried the Buddha's body to the funeral pyre.

At that time, the person who would later become Venerable Padumacchadaniya Thera took a beautiful, fully blossomed lotus flower and offered it at the funeral pyre as an act of homage to the Buddha.

He also created a canopy in the sky above the funeral pyre, expressing his deep respect and devotion to the Fully Enlightened One, even after the Buddha's passing away.

The venerable elder recalled that, as a result of this meritorious deed, he never experienced an unfortunate destination. In a subsequent existence, he became a universal monarch named Padumissara, possessing great power and ruling over the land bounded by the four great oceans.

Ultimately, he attained profound spiritual accomplishments, including:

  • Four Analytical Knowledges (Paṭisambhidā)

  • Eight Liberations (Vimokkha)

  • Six Higher Knowledges (Abhiññā)

He declared that he had fulfilled the Buddha's teachings and completed the spiritual task.

2. The Biography of Venerable Padumacchadaniya Thera

According to the commentary on his Apadāna, the venerable elder had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas over many lifetimes.

During the dispensation of Buddha Vipassī, he was born into a respectable family and developed faith in the Triple Gem as he grew older.

After Buddha Vipassī attained final Nibbāna, he offered lotus flowers at the funeral pyre and provided a canopy above the sacred cremation site.

The commentary further explains that lotus flowers appeared around his dwelling places, including the places where he rested during the day and night. This became associated with his name, Padumacchadaniya, meaning one associated with a lotus canopy or covering.

In a later period, he renounced worldly life, entered the Buddhist monastic order, practiced diligently, and attained arahantship in a relatively short time.

His life demonstrates the connection between faith, meritorious action, diligent practice, and ultimate liberation.

3. Six Important Buddhist Teachings

1. Faith (Saddhā)

True faith is expressed through wholesome actions, respect, and devotion to the Triple Gem.

2. Recollection of the Buddha (Buddhānussati)

Remembering the Buddha's virtues helps cultivate a peaceful, respectful, and wholesome mind.

3. Offerings and Practice (Āmisa Pūjā and Paṭipatti Pūjā)

Offering flowers and constructing a canopy represent material homage. Practicing the Dhamma and following the Noble Path represent homage through practice.

4. Karma and Its Results (Kamma)

Wholesome actions performed with good intentions contribute to favorable results according to causes and conditions.

5. Diligence (Viriya)

Faith and generosity provide a foundation, but liberation requires continuous effort, mindfulness, and wisdom.

6. Nibbāna as the Highest Goal

Worldly wealth, power, and status are impermanent. The ultimate purpose of Buddhist practice is liberation from greed, hatred, and delusion.

4. Lessons for Modern Society

The story offers several lessons for contemporary life:

  • Great goodness can begin with a small act performed with a sincere heart.

  • Respect and gratitude are essential human values.

  • Generosity should develop alongside wisdom and spiritual practice.

  • True success is not measured by wealth or authority, but by the ability to overcome mental defilements.

These principles can also guide modern leadership, education, organizational management, and the ethical development of artificial intelligence.

The lotus symbolizes faith, the canopy symbolizes reverence, and liberation symbolizes the highest achievement of human life.
