Song: The Path of Dhamma Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna

[Intro]

In ancient times, a heart believed,
A noble gift, a path conceived.
A place to walk, a place to pray,
A path of wisdom along the way.

[Verse 1]

To Buddha Atthadassī, wise and kind,
A devoted heart prepared a shrine.
A path of bricks, so strong and long,
A peaceful place where minds grow strong.

Five cubits high, one hundred long,
A place for meditation, calm and strong.
With faith and love, the path was made,
A timeless gift that would never fade.

[Chorus]

Build the path, illuminate the mind,
Let wisdom and compassion shine.
Step by step, with mindful care,
Find the peace that waits within.

Build the path for all to see,
A gift of love for humanity.
Though the road may stretch so far,
With Dhamma, we know who we are.

[Verse 2]

The Buddha blessed the gift with grace,
And held the sand within His hands.
He spoke of merit yet to come,
Through countless lives beneath the sun.

Through heavenly worlds and human birth,
He journeyed on across the earth.
When Buddha Gotama came to be,
He joined the path to set him free.

[Bridge]

Mindfulness in every stride,
Perseverance as our guide.
Concentration, wisdom bright,
Lead the heart beyond the night.

[Final Chorus]

Build the path, illuminate the mind,
Let wisdom and compassion shine.
Step by step, with mindful care,
Find the freedom waiting there.

Build the path for all to see,
A gift of love for humanity.
Beyond all wealth and worldly fame,
Nibbāna is the highest aim.

[Outro]

One path was built, one seed was sown,
A gift whose goodness still has grown.
May every step in life we take,
Bring peace to all for Dhamma's sake.

Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera: The Gift of a Walking Meditation Path and the Path to Liberation

1. Background and Story in the Tipiṭaka

The Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna appears in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Book 32 of the Pali Canon, in the Upāli Vagga, Discourse No. 48.

It tells the story of a devoted disciple who constructed a walking meditation path and offered it to Buddha Atthadassī.

According to his account, in a distant past, he had a walking meditation path built with bricks as an offering to Buddha Atthadassī, the Great Sage and Supreme Guide of the world.

The path was beautifully constructed, five cubits high and one hundred cubits long. It was a pleasant place, suitable for meditation and spiritual cultivation.

When Buddha Atthadassī accepted the offering, He took some sand in His hand and made a prediction concerning the merits of the donor.

The Buddha declared that through the offering of the sand and the well-constructed walking path, the donor would enjoy great prosperity, including the Seven Treasures and divine sovereignty among the gods for three aeons, surrounded by celestial nymphs.

After returning to the human world, he would become a regional king and would become a universal monarch three times.

The venerable elder later declared that throughout eighteen hundred aeons since performing that meritorious deed, he had never experienced an unfortunate destination.

Ultimately, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. He declared that he had completed the task of the Buddha's teachings.

This account illustrates the value of generosity that supports meditation and spiritual development.

2. The Biography of Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera

According to the commentary on the Caṅkamadāyaka Therāpadāna, the venerable elder had accumulated meritorious deeds under previous Buddhas over many lifetimes.

His offering during the time of Buddha Atthadassī

During the dispensation of Buddha Atthadassī, he was born into a family and developed faith in the Buddha's teachings as he grew older.

With sincere devotion, he constructed a walking meditation path for the Buddha. The path was built with bricks on a raised foundation and covered with beautiful white sand resembling pearls.

It was not merely a beautiful structure, but a place suitable for walking meditation, mindfulness, and mental cultivation.

The Buddha's acceptance and prediction

After accepting the walking path, Buddha Atthadassī provided spiritual encouragement to the donor and predicted that he would become a disciple of the future Buddha Gotama.

This prediction reflected the spiritual significance of his meritorious deed and its connection with his future attainment.

His journey through different existences

As a result of this wholesome deed, he experienced happiness among celestial beings and human beings in successive existences.

When Buddha Gotama arose in the world, he was reborn into a family, developed faith in the Dhamma, and entered the Buddhist monastic order.

His attainment of arahantship

After ordination, he devoted himself to spiritual practice and soon attained arahantship, becoming free from mental defilements.

He became known as Venerable Caṅkamadāyaka Thera, a name associated with his previous offering of a walking meditation path.

Later, when he recollected his former meritorious deed, he felt deep joy and recited verses describing its results.

3. Seven Important Buddhist Teachings

1. Generosity (Dāna)

Constructing a walking meditation path for the Buddha represents generosity that creates lasting benefits. Giving can include material possessions, knowledge, opportunities, and public facilities.

2. Faith (Saddhā)

The elder expressed his devotion to Buddha Atthadassī through meaningful action. True faith inspires wholesome deeds.

3. Effort (Viriya)

Walking meditation cultivates perseverance and diligence. It helps overcome laziness and strengthens commitment to spiritual development.

4. Mindfulness (Sati)

Walking meditation trains practitioners to remain aware of bodily movements, including standing, lifting the feet, stepping forward, and placing the feet down.

5. Concentration (Samādhi)

A suitable walking meditation environment supports mental calmness and concentration, providing a foundation for insight and wisdom.

6. Karma and Its Results (Kamma)

The elder described the wholesome results of constructing the meditation path. His account illustrates the relationship between intentional actions and their consequences.

7. Wisdom and Nibbāna

The highest goal is not worldly prosperity or celestial happiness, but liberation from mental defilements and suffering.

4. The Importance of Walking Meditation

Walking meditation (Caṅkama) is a Buddhist meditation practice in which practitioners walk back and forth mindfully, observing bodily movements and mental states.

Its benefits include:

  • Developing perseverance and patience.

  • Strengthening mindfulness of bodily movements.

  • Cultivating concentration.

  • Supporting insight into the nature of existence.

  • Complementing seated meditation practice.

Therefore, constructing a walking meditation path is a meaningful way to support Buddhist spiritual practice.
