“From Belief to Practice”: The Tevijja Sutta as a Pathway to Global Peace in the Age of AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly shapes human life, economies, and global relationships, one fundamental question continues to emerge: How can humanity build lasting peace in a world defined by information, competing perspectives, and borderless competition?

The teachings found in the Tevijja Sutta of the Dīgha Nikāya offer a meaningful response through a dialogue between the Buddha and two young brahmins who sought the true path leading to the Brahma world.

The Buddha questioned the religious practices of many brahmins of that era, pointing out that although they continuously recited prayers and performed rituals, they had never directly experienced or truly known the destination they claimed to pursue. He compared such conduct to “blind people leading one another,” moving forward without genuine understanding or direction.

The core message of the discourse is therefore not a rejection of faith, but a demonstration that truth and peace cannot arise from belief alone. They require direct practice, self-cultivation, and disciplined transformation.

The Buddha presented a practical path beginning with the cultivation of morality at elementary, intermediate, and higher levels. Ethical conduct serves as the foundation for purifying bodily actions, speech, and harmonious coexistence with others. Once this foundation is established, practitioners develop the mind by overcoming the Five Hindrances, which obstruct clarity, inner peace, and sound judgment.

As the mind becomes refined, the Buddha further taught the cultivation and expansion of the Four Brahmavihāras—loving-kindness (mettā), compassion (karuṇā), empathetic joy (muditā), and equanimity (upekkhā)—extending them in all directions toward all beings. Through this practice, the mind becomes expansive, subtle, and free from division.

Applied to the AI era, these teachings suggest that sustainable peace cannot depend solely on technological advancement or the production of vast amounts of information. Rather, peace begins with cultivating individuals who possess ethical discipline, emotional stability, and the ability to coexist compassionately amid diversity.

In a world where algorithms can amplify both knowledge and conflict, the Four Brahmavihāras may serve as an essential safeguard against hatred, polarization, and irresponsible uses of technology.

The Tevijja Sutta therefore offers more than a religious path to the Brahma world. It presents a universal principle: genuine peace begins with transformation within and extends outward through ethical action and compassionate engagement with society.

As humanity moves deeper into the age of artificial intelligence, the discourse continues to deliver a timeless message—the path toward a peaceful future depends not only on more advanced machines, but on elevating the quality of the human mind alongside technological progress.
