Song Title: “Choose Your Friends, Choose Your Path”

Verse 1
Life is a journey we never walk alone,
We choose our companions, we choose where we go.
Good friends can guide us toward a better way,
Bad influences can make our hearts stray.

Who we walk with can shape who we become,
Every voice we follow leaves a mark on us.
Choose your companions before you move on,
For those who walk beside you can shape your dawn.

Pre-Chorus
Look beyond what meets the eye,
Listen with wisdom, question why.
Know the causes, understand the truth,
Then choose your path with a mindful heart.

Chorus
Choose your friends, choose your happiness,
Choose the path that leads to blessedness.
Pleasure may shine for a moment or two,
But wisdom shows what is lasting and true.

Choose the Dhamma, choose the light,
Choose the wisdom that makes your heart right.
Life becomes peaceful, life becomes clear,
When we pause and think before we act from fear.

Verse 2
Many kinds of happiness come our way,
Some disappear by the end of the day.
Material pleasure may fade like a flame,
But peace born within does not need a name.

Do not chase desire until you lose your way,
Do not let attachment control every day.
Learn moderation, train your mind to see,
And discover the happiness of being free.

Pre-Chorus
What we see may not be all,
Hidden causes may explain the fall.
Use mindfulness before you decide,
Look for the truth that appearances hide.

Chorus
Choose your friends, choose your happiness,
Choose the path that leads to blessedness.
Pleasure may shine for a moment or two,
But wisdom shows what is lasting and true.

Choose the Dhamma, choose the light,
Choose the wisdom that makes your heart right.
Life becomes peaceful, life becomes clear,
When we pause and think before we act from fear.

Bridge
Do not learn Dhamma only to remember,
Let it live in every act we render.
Morality is the root, mindfulness the guide,
Wisdom walks beside us with nothing to hide.

The foolish make mistakes and refuse to see,
The wise accept correction and choose to be free.
When we see our faults, we can start again,
Turn from confusion and walk the path of truth.

Final Chorus
Choose your friends, choose your mind,
Choose the goodness that leaves suffering behind.
Understand the causes, understand the way,
Do not be trapped by temporary pleasure each day.

Choose the Dhamma, choose the peace,
Train your heart until confusion starts to cease.
From one wise person to a community,
May Dhamma become the light that sets us free.

Outro
Choose good friends... choose the way.
Choose the Dhamma... every day.
Choose wisdom... let it grow.
And walk in peace... wherever you go.

Buddhist Teachings Highlight the Influence of People, the Nature of Happiness and the Need for Wisdom

BANGKOK — The teachings contained in the Second Fifty (Dutiya Paṇṇāsaka) of Volume 20 of the Sutta Piṭaka, Volume 12 of the Aṅguttara Nikāya, Dukanipāta, present a series of teachings organized around pairs of principles. They explore the influence of individuals, different forms of happiness, causes and signs, the role of Dhamma, and the distinction between wise and foolish conduct.

The Second Fifty consists of five sections: Puggalavagga, Sukhavagga, Nimittavagga, Dhammavagga, and Bālavagga. Although the subjects differ, they share a central message: a meaningful life depends not simply on what people desire, but on whom they associate with, what kind of happiness they pursue, how carefully they examine causes and conditions, how they understand Dhamma, and whether they act with wisdom.

Puggalavagga: The Influence of People

The Puggalavagga places emphasis on the qualities of individuals. Different types of people can have very different effects on those around them. Association with wholesome people can support growth, while association with harmful influences can contribute to decline.

This principle highlights the importance of spiritual friendship and wholesome companionship. Choosing one's companions is therefore more than a matter of personal preference. It can influence attitudes, behavior and the direction of an entire life.

The teaching remains relevant in today's world, including social networks and online communities. What people repeatedly listen to, watch and believe can gradually shape their values and decisions.

Sukhavagga: Understanding the Nature of Happiness

The Sukhavagga examines happiness from different perspectives. Buddhist teaching does not reduce happiness to material comfort or temporary pleasure. It also recognizes happiness associated with peace, wholesome conduct and the development of the mind.

The key question is therefore not simply whether something feels pleasant, but whether that happiness contributes to lasting well-being or eventually becomes a source of suffering.

When happiness is pursued without understanding desire and attachment, temporary pleasure can lead to dependence and dissatisfaction. When happiness is accompanied by mindfulness, moderation and mental development, it can become more stable and beneficial.

Nimittavagga: Examining Signs, Causes and Conditions

The Nimittavagga deals with signs, mental objects and factors associated with the development of the mind and spiritual practice.

An important principle is the need to look beyond appearances and examine the conditions behind what is happening. A single event may arise from many causes, and judging solely from outward appearances can lead to misunderstanding.

This principle has particular relevance in the modern information environment. People encounter large amounts of information every day, making it increasingly important to examine sources, understand context and distinguish facts from opinions before reaching conclusions.

Dhammavagga: From Learning Dhamma to Living Dhamma

The Dhammavagga emphasizes the importance of Dhamma as a guide for life. Merely memorizing teachings is not sufficient. Dhamma must be understood, reflected upon and put into practice.

The ultimate purpose is therefore to transform Dhamma from words into lived conduct.

When morality, mindfulness and wisdom become part of daily life, Dhamma can guide thoughts and actions and help individuals respond to conflict and change with greater stability.

Bālavagga: Foolishness and the Failure to Learn

The Bālavagga examines the characteristics and consequences of foolish conduct. A foolish person tends to act without properly considering causes, consequences and the results of actions.

A wise person, by contrast, considers what should and should not be done, understands consequences and remains willing to learn and improve.

The distinction between foolishness and wisdom therefore does not depend simply on academic knowledge. It is reflected in how people think, make decisions and take responsibility for their actions.

A Contemporary Message

Taken together, the five sections of the Second Fifty offer a practical sequence for personal development:

Choose your companions → understand happiness → examine causes → learn Dhamma → cultivate wisdom.

These principles can be applied in families, schools, workplaces and wider society. They are particularly relevant in an age characterized by rapid information, competing opinions, social conflict and the constant pursuit of immediate satisfaction.

The central message can be summarized simply:

“The direction of life depends not only on what we desire, but on whom we associate with, what kind of happiness we seek, how carefully we examine causes, how deeply we understand Dhamma, and how wisely we guide our lives.”

The teachings of the Second Fifty therefore remain relevant as a framework for developing responsible individuals who can think carefully, choose wisely, examine reality and cultivate inner peace.
