Song: Tenfold Path of Wisdom Inspired by the Aṅguttara Nikāya, Dasaka–Ekādasa Nipāta, Catuttha Paṇṇāsaka, Puggalavagga

[Verse 1]
Before we choose a friend, look to the heart
Before we act, let wisdom play its part
Right in view, right in intention too
Let every word and deed be kind and true

[Verse 2]
Right action guides the way we live
Right livelihood teaches us to give
With right effort and mindful care
We walk the path with wisdom there

[Chorus]
Right view, right intention
Right speech and right action lead the way
Right livelihood, right effort
Right mindfulness through every day
Right concentration, right knowledge
Right liberation, shining bright
Tenfold wisdom guides our footsteps
From delusion toward the light

[Verse 3]
Choose the friends who walk with truth
Honor those who cultivate the good
Praise the hearts that serve with care
Respect the wisdom they can share

[Verse 4]
When wrong views arise within
Turn the mind toward truth again
With mindfulness, stand firm and clear
Let wisdom overcome all fear

[Chorus]
Right view, right intention
Right speech and right action lead the way
Right livelihood, right effort
Right mindfulness through every day
Right concentration, right knowledge
Right liberation, shining bright
Tenfold wisdom guides our footsteps
From delusion toward the light

[Bridge]
Ten qualities, a path of grace
Ten steps toward a wiser place
Leave the wrong and choose the right
Let compassion be our guiding light

[Final Chorus]
Right view, right intention
Right speech and right action lead the way
Right livelihood, right effort
Right mindfulness through every day
Right concentration, right knowledge
Right liberation, shining bright
Tenfold wisdom guides our footsteps
From darkness into wisdom's light

[Ending]
Walk with Dhamma, walk with truth
Let wisdom guide the heart anew
Tenfold wisdom, one clear way

Bringing peace to life each day

The Chapter on Persons: Ten Qualities That Should Be Avoided and Ten Qualities That Should Be Cultivated

In the Puggalavagga, the Chapter on Persons, found in the Anguttara Nikaya, Book 24 of the Pali Canon, the Buddha explains the qualities of individuals who should not be associated with and those who should be associated with.

The teaching presents ten unwholesome qualities. They are: wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong concentration, wrong knowledge, and wrong liberation.

A person who possesses these ten qualities should not be closely associated with, because such qualities can lead to unwholesome ways of thought, speech, conduct, and practice.

The Buddha then presents ten wholesome qualities: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right knowledge, and right liberation.

A person who possesses these ten qualities is worthy of association and proximity, because these qualities support wholesome conduct, wisdom, and spiritual development.

The teaching further extends this principle to various forms of social relationship. It distinguishes between those who should not be honored and those who should be honored; those who should not be praised and those who should be praised; those who should not be respected and those who should be respected; those who should not be revered and those who should be revered; and those who should not be encouraged to rejoice and those who should be encouraged to rejoice.

The central message is that a person's value should be considered through the qualities and conduct they cultivate, rather than merely through external status or appearance.

The Buddha also explains the consequences of these two paths. A person possessing the ten unwholesome qualities experiences many unwholesome consequences, while a person possessing the ten wholesome qualities experiences abundant merit.

Viewed in contemporary life, this teaching can serve as a framework for self-reflection. It encourages people to examine their views, intentions, speech, actions, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, concentration, knowledge, and ultimate direction in life.

The teaching therefore concerns not only the question of whom one should associate with, but also the deeper question of what kind of person one is becoming.

The ten wholesome qualities provide a path from right understanding toward wisdom and liberation, while the ten unwholesome qualities serve as a warning against patterns of thought and conduct that may lead to harmful consequences.

The Puggalavagga thus presents a comprehensive teaching on wise association, self-development, spiritual friendship, and the cultivation of wisdom, emphasizing the transformation from wrong view to right view and from an unwholesome way of life toward a life guided by Dhamma.
