Song: The Lamp of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Buddhavagga, Anuruddha Thera Apadāna

[Intro]

Beneath the tree, so calm and still,
A Buddha rests in peace of mind.
A faithful heart approaches Him,
A little lamp, a gift divine.

[Verse 1]

A tiny flame begins to glow,
A simple gift from deep within.
With faith and love, the oil is poured,
A humble act, a path to begin.

For seven days, the light burns bright,
A gentle flame against the night.
More than a lamp for eyes to see,
It speaks of faith and purity.

[Chorus]

Light the lamp and let it shine,
Let wisdom guide the heart and mind.
Give with kindness, give with care,
Let compassion everywhere.

Though every flame must fade away,
The truth can guide us day by day.
Keep on learning, keep hearts bright,
Turn the darkness into light.

[Verse 2]

Give without a need for praise,
Walk with kindness all your days.
Share your knowledge, lend a hand,
Bring hope across this troubled land.

Crowns may fall and fortunes fade,
Nothing worldly here is made
To last forever, unchanged and strong;
Wisdom helps us see beyond.

[Bridge]

Four analytical knowledges realized,
Eight liberations, wisdom's light.
Six supernormal knowledges attained,
The fruits of practice, clearly explained.

Not in riches, not in fame,
But in the freedom we reclaim.
Train the heart and understand,
Let wisdom guide the life we stand.

[Final Chorus]

Light the lamp and let it shine,
Let wisdom guide the heart and mind.
Give with kindness, give with care,
Spread compassion everywhere.

Even one small flame can show
A path where understanding grows.
Together, let our actions be
A light of hope for humanity.

[Outro]

One small lamp can light the way,
Wisdom shines beyond the day.
Faith and insight, hand in hand,
Bring a brighter world to every land.

News Feature: The Light of Faith and Wisdom in Buddhist Teachings

The Anuruddha Thera Apadāna recounts the story of a devotional offering made to a Buddha named Sumedha. It illustrates the significance of faith, wholesome intention, generosity, and spiritual cultivation in Buddhist tradition.

According to the verses, the Venerable Anuruddha recalled a former life in which he encountered the Buddha Sumedha, described as a courageous and noble leader of the world. Seeing the Buddha dwelling in seclusion beneath a tree, he approached respectfully, raised his hands in reverence, and requested permission to offer a lamp while the Buddha was absorbed in meditation.

After receiving permission, he arranged a lamp with a wick and a great quantity of oil. The lamp continued to burn for seven days before going out by itself. The offering was made with a purified and devoted mind, accompanied by a firm intention to honor the Buddha.

The Venerable Anuruddha then described the fruits attributed to that meritorious deed in the verses. These included rebirth in a celestial realm, a radiant celestial mansion, and numerous occasions of kingship as a universal monarch. The verses also recount his attainment of divine status and the divine eye, a supernormal faculty of vision described in Buddhist scriptures.

Finally, he declared that he had realized the four analytical knowledges (paṭisambhidā), the eight liberations (vimokkha), and the six supernormal knowledges (abhiññā). He affirmed that he had fulfilled the task of practicing the Buddha's teaching.

This account presents the lamp as more than a physical source of light. It also invites reflection on faith, generosity, and the development of wisdom. The offering symbolizes reverence and wholesome intention, while the culmination of the story points toward spiritual attainment through Buddhist practice.

Four Lessons from the Story

1. Intention matters. Giving with sincerity and a wholesome mind is more meaningful than giving merely to gain recognition or material rewards.

2. Outer light can inspire inner wisdom. A lamp dispels physical darkness; wisdom helps dispel ignorance and supports discernment between wholesome and unwholesome actions.

3. Generosity develops the mind. Giving is an opportunity to practice compassion, reduce attachment, and consider the genuine benefit of others.

4. Spiritual development is the deeper goal. The account includes descriptions of worldly and celestial rewards, but its conclusion emphasizes spiritual knowledge and the completion of Buddhist practice.

A message for modern society: We can bring light into the world by sharing knowledge, helping those in difficulty, speaking truthfully, and using our abilities for the common good. Even a small act of kindness can become a source of hope and understanding.
