[Verse 1]
In ancient times, when Siddhattha shone,
A Brahmin saw the Buddha's throne.
A golden presence, calm and bright,
Inspired his heart with pure delight.
His virtue stretched like endless earth,
His wisdom held immeasurable worth.
His meditation, deep and wide,
Like mountains rising to the sky.
[Chorus]
We praise the Buddha, wise and true,
A guiding light for me and you.
Through moral strength and wisdom bright,
He leads the world from dark to light.
Let every word of praise be true,
Let kindness guide the things we do.
A heart inspired by goodness grows,
And peace throughout the world it sows.
[Verse 2]
The Brahmin praised the Buddha's name,
Four verses carried forth his acclaim.
Through faith and goodness, seeds were sown,
A path of merit became his own.
Through many lives, his journey grew,
Until the highest truth he knew.
He left the world, embraced the way,
And let all suffering fade away.
[Chorus]
We praise the Buddha, wise and true,
A guiding light for me and you.
Through moral strength and wisdom bright,
He leads the world from dark to light.
[Bridge]
The Fourfold Wisdom came to be,
The Six Great Knowledges set him free.
The Eight Liberations, deep and wide,
A peaceful mind with nothing to hide.
No more defilements, no more chains,
The end of suffering remains.
The sacred path was fully known,
The seeds of wisdom fully grown.
[Verse 3]
In modern times, through words we share,
Let truth and kindness fill the air.
Praise not for fame, nor selfish gain,
But for the good that shall remain.
Let wisdom guide technology,
Let truth inspire humanity.
Through honest words and hearts sincere,
A better world will soon appear.
[Final Chorus]
We praise the Buddha, wise and true,
His timeless Dhamma guides us through.
Let wisdom, kindness, virtue shine,
And peace awaken in humankind.
The Story of Venerable Parappasādaka Thera
The Benefits of Praising the Qualities of the Buddha
1. The Background in the Buddhist Scriptures
The Parappasādaka Thera Apadāna is the fourth account in the Sakacittaniya Vagga of the Apadāna, Khuddaka Nikāya, Volume 32 of the Pali Canon.
This account describes the meritorious deed of praising the Buddha Siddhattha.
According to the canonical verses, the Buddha is described as a noble, courageous, and supreme being, a great seeker of spiritual qualities, a conqueror of extraordinary obstacles, and one whose complexion shines like gold.
The verses then praise four remarkable qualities of the Buddha.
The Buddha's meditation: His meditative attainment is compared to the immeasurable Himalayan mountains and the vast, difficult-to-cross ocean.
The Buddha's morality: His virtue is compared to the boundless earth, beautiful and magnificent like an exquisite garland.
The Buddha's wisdom: His knowledge is compared to the immeasurable and unobstructed sky.
A Brahmin named Sona praised the Buddha Siddhattha, who was invincible, through four verses.
As a result of this meritorious deed, he declared that he had never fallen into an unfortunate realm throughout ninety-four eons. He enjoyed numerous forms of happiness and prosperity in fortunate realms.
He also recalled that four universal monarchs possessing the Seven Treasures arose in the fourteenth eon.
Eventually, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges.
He declared that he had completed the work of the Buddha's teaching.
2. The Commentary and the Life of the Venerable Thera
The commentary provides additional details about his previous life and spiritual development.
His birth during the time of Buddha Siddhattha
According to the commentary, the individual was born into a Brahmin family during the time of Buddha Siddhattha. He was highly educated and proficient in the three Vedas, grammar, various branches of knowledge, and the science of the Great Man's Characteristics.
The commentary identifies him as Sela Brahmin.
When he saw Buddha Siddhattha, who possessed the Thirty-Two Marks of a Great Man and the Eighty Secondary Characteristics, he became deeply impressed and praised the Buddha through various reasons and comparisons.
The fruits of praising the Buddha
Through this meritorious action, he enjoyed the six sensual heavenly realms, including the status of Sakka and Māra, and later experienced the prosperity of a universal monarch in the human world.
Ordination and enlightenment
In the era of the present Buddha, he was born into a wealthy family.
As he grew older, he developed faith in the Buddha's teachings and entered the monastic order.
Before long, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges and the Six Higher Knowledges, becoming an Arahant who had completely eradicated all mental defilements.
The commentary explains that he became known as Parappasādaka Thera because his praise of the Buddha inspired faith and confidence in others.
3. Six Important Dhamma Principles
Buddhānussati – Recollection of the Buddha: Reflecting on the Buddha's wisdom, purity, and compassion.
Saddhā – Faith: Developing confidence through understanding and reflection.
Sīla – Morality: Cultivating ethical conduct and non-harming.
Samādhi – Concentration: Training the mind to become stable and peaceful.
Paññā – Wisdom: Understanding the true nature of existence through insight.
Kalyāṇavācā – Wholesome Speech: Using words to communicate truth, goodness, and beneficial teachings.
4. The Spiritual Achievements of Parappasādaka Thera
The Venerable Thera attained:
The Four Analytical Knowledges: understanding of meaning, principles, language, and intellectual discernment.
The Eight Liberations: profound states of meditative liberation.
The Six Higher Knowledges: including the knowledge of the destruction of mental defilements.
Arahantship: complete liberation from the cycle of suffering.
5. Lessons for Modern Society
The story teaches that praising goodness should be based on truth and understanding.
In today's digital society, people often praise others through social media without considering whether their statements are accurate.
The example of Parappasādaka Thera reminds us that genuine praise should inspire people to develop good qualities rather than encourage vanity or personal gain.
This principle is also relevant to artificial intelligence. AI systems should communicate truthfully, avoid exaggeration, and promote knowledge that benefits humanity.
The greatest praise is not empty admiration, but recognition of genuine goodness that inspires others to follow the path of wisdom and virtue.
