The second preparatory meeting for the International Dhammachakra Puja, Sarnath 2027, held on October 4, 2026, advanced plans for the seven-day event scheduled for January 15–21, 2027, in Sarnath, Varanasi, India. Organisers are preparing worship ceremonies, accommodation, food, medical services, volunteers, publicity, and international coordination for Buddhist communities from different countries.
Preparations for the International Dhammachakra Puja, Sarnath 2027 are moving forward following the second preparatory meeting held on October 4, 2026.
The event is scheduled to take place from January 15 to 21, 2027, for a total of seven days, in Sarnath, Varanasi, India, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites and the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon and set the Dhamma wheel in motion.
The main objectives of the event are to honour the Buddha at the site of the first sermon, encourage Dhamma practice, and strengthen cooperation among the Sangha, Buddhist organisations, and Buddhist communities from different countries.
The meeting also reviewed the previous event, which received strong support from temples, organisations, and local communities. The experience gained from the previous programme will be used to improve coordination, services, and facilities for participants during the upcoming event.
The organising structure will cover several major areas, including ceremonial worship, food services, accommodation and medical support, publicity, and volunteer coordination. Representatives from participating communities will be invited to take responsibility for different areas, while membership lists and contact information will be verified before the event.
For food and charitable offerings, temples, organisations, families, and individual supporters will be invited to sponsor meals, drinking water, and essential supplies. A seven-day sponsorship schedule will be prepared, allowing supporters to contribute according to their capacity.
Accommodation arrangements will also be coordinated for participants. At the same time, doctors, nurses, and other healthcare personnel will be invited to provide medical support. Detailed operational procedures and duty schedules will be developed before the event.
Volunteer coordination is another major priority. The meeting proposed requesting approximately 20–50 university volunteers, along with cadets from the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Formal letters will be sent to educational institutions, and selected volunteers will receive training in their responsibilities, etiquette, hospitality, and participant support before the programme begins.
The publicity campaign will use multiple channels, including social media, mobile text messages, printed media, and brochures. Information will be distributed both to local communities in Sarnath and to international Buddhist networks. Contact information for event coordinators will also be provided to facilitate communication with participants and supporters.
The meeting further proposed a joint procession linking significant Buddhist sites in Sarnath. The procession could take place either on the opening or closing day of the programme. However, its format, route, and schedule remain under discussion and will be formally announced after confirmation.
Regarding the budget and financial support, contributions in both cash and kind will be sought from temples, organisations, families, and individuals according to their means. Donation figures and expenditure will be verified by the finance team before being included in official records.
The next phase will focus on confirming responsible coordinators, preparing schedules for meal sponsors and volunteers, and communicating the programme widely to participating communities.
All parties at the meeting emphasised the importance of unity, punctuality, systematic coordination, and equal hospitality for all participants.
The organisers expect the International Dhammachakra Puja, Sarnath 2027, to serve not only as a major Buddhist worship programme, but also as an opportunity to strengthen international Buddhist cooperation, encourage Dhamma practice, and build lasting connections among Buddhist communities around the world.
