Song: Across the River of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Subhūtivagga, Uttiya Thera Apadana

[Verse 1]

Beside the river Candabhaga
A crocodile was searching for food
Then came the Buddha, Siddhattha
With wisdom, compassion, and truth

The crocodile saw the Holy One
And felt devotion deep inside
"Please climb upon my back, Great Master
I'll take You safely to the other side"

[Verse 2]

Though feared by many, strong and wild
It offered help with a joyful heart
A simple act of loving kindness
Became the beginning of a sacred path

The Buddha knew its pure intention
And blessed its journey toward the light
A promise of the Deathless future
Beyond the darkness of endless life

[Chorus]

Carry me across the river of faith
Beyond the fears, beyond the pain
Cross the river of desire and sorrow
Let wisdom lead us to a brighter tomorrow

Give with kindness, serve with love
Seek the truth that lies above
No worldly treasure, no earthly fame
Can free the heart from suffering's chain

[Verse 3]

Seven times a heavenly ruler
Three times a monarch of the land
Yet worldly power could never satisfy
The deeper longing of his heart

He sought the truth, he joined the Order
And walked the path of mindfulness
Through illness, effort, and meditation
He found the peace of deathlessness

[Bridge]

Compassion builds the bridge
Wisdom lights the way
Perseverance gives us strength
To face another day

From faith to practice
From practice to insight
From suffering to freedom
From darkness into light

[Final Chorus]

Carry us across the river of faith
Beyond the fears, beyond the pain
Let compassion guide humanity
Toward wisdom, peace, and harmony

Not for power, not for fame
But to be free from suffering's chain
Across the river, we find the way
To lasting peace beyond decay

Uttiya Thera Apadana: The Crocodile Who Carried the Buddha Across the River

An inspiring Buddhist account of compassion, selfless service, wholesome intention, perseverance, and ultimate liberation.

1. Background and Story

The story of Venerable Uttiya appears in the Tipitaka, Volume 32, Khuddaka Nikaya, Apadana, Subhuti Vagga, No. 28.

It recounts a remarkable event from a previous existence during the time of Siddhattha Buddha.

At that time, Uttiya was born as a crocodile living near the Candabhaga River. He usually searched for food along the riverbank.

One day, Siddhattha Buddha wished to cross the river and approached the landing place. The crocodile also arrived there.

Seeing the Buddha, the crocodile developed a feeling of devotion and offered to carry Him across the river on its back.

The crocodile invited the Buddha:

"Please ascend, Great Hero. I shall carry You across the river. May You show compassion toward my ancestral territory, Great Sage."

The Buddha accepted the invitation and climbed onto the crocodile's back.

Filled with joy and enthusiasm, the crocodile swam swiftly across the river, carrying the Buddha safely to the opposite bank.

The Buddha recognized the crocodile's sincere and joyful mind and made a prediction that it would eventually attain the Deathless, or Nibbana.

After its death, the crocodile was reborn in the heavenly realm, surrounded by celestial maidens, and enjoyed divine happiness.

According to the Apadana, it became the king of the devas seven times and a universal monarch three times.

In its final existence, the being was reborn during the time of Gotama Buddha, entered the Buddhist monastic order, practiced meditation, and eventually attained arahantship.

Venerable Uttiya declared that he had realized the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. His spiritual duties were complete.

2. The Biography and Spiritual Development of Venerable Uttiya

The commentary provides further details about his spiritual journey.

His previous existence

During the time of Siddhattha Buddha, he was born as a crocodile in the Candabhaga River. Having developed sincere faith, he offered his back as a means of transportation for the Buddha.

The Buddha's prediction

The Buddha recognized his wholesome state of mind and predicted that he would eventually attain Nibbana.

His heavenly and royal existences

He enjoyed heavenly happiness and became the king of the devas seven times. He also became a universal monarch three times.

His final existence

According to the commentary on the Theragatha, Uttiya was born into a Brahmin family in Savatthi. As a young man, he renounced worldly life in search of the Deathless and became a wandering ascetic.

Later, he encountered Gotama Buddha and entered the Buddhist monastic order.

Initially, he was unable to achieve his spiritual goal. After seeing other monks attain their objectives, he requested a brief teaching from the Buddha.

He followed the Buddha's instruction and began practicing insight meditation.

When illness arose during his practice, he used the experience as an opportunity to develop spiritual urgency and greater effort.

Through diligent insight meditation, he eventually attained arahantship.

His life demonstrates that sincere effort, mindfulness, and wisdom can overcome even difficult obstacles.

3. Six Buddhist Teachings

  1. Compassion: Help others whenever there is an opportunity to do so.

  2. Faith: Sincere devotion can become the foundation of wholesome actions.

  3. Selflessness: Use one's abilities and resources for the benefit of others.

  4. Kamma: Wholesome intentions and actions contribute to beneficial results.

  5. Perseverance: Do not abandon spiritual development when difficulties arise.

  6. Liberation: Worldly wealth and power are temporary; freedom from suffering is the ultimate goal.

4. Application to Modern Society and Buddhist AI

The story of Uttiya Thera can provide ethical inspiration for modern technological development.

The crocodile carried the Buddha across the river. In a symbolic sense, this can represent the use of knowledge and technology to help humanity move from difficulties toward solutions.

The proposed Buddhist Wisdom Artificial Intelligence Maha AI Plus could adopt six guiding principles:

  • Compassion in technological development.

  • Trustworthiness and accuracy of information.

  • Selfless service to society.

  • Responsibility for technological consequences.

  • Continuous improvement through perseverance.

  • Wisdom and ethical reasoning in decision-making.

Artificial intelligence should serve humanity rather than dominate or harm it.

Conclusion

The story of Venerable Uttiya teaches that compassion can arise in unexpected circumstances, that even a simple act of service has moral significance, and that perseverance and wisdom can lead to liberation.

The greatest achievement is not heavenly pleasure or worldly power, but freedom from suffering.
