Song: The Sacred Sand of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Subhūtivagga, Pulina Pujaka Therāpadāna

[Verse 1]

In the days of Buddha Vipassi
A faithful heart began its way
He cleared the sand around the Bodhi shrine
And spread clean sand in a sacred place

No golden treasures, no riches to give
Just humble hands and a heart sincere
A little offering made with love
Became a blessing through the years

[Verse 2]

Old sand represents our troubled minds
Fresh clean sand, a heart renewed
Let go of hatred, greed, and pride
And fill our lives with what is true

From faith to action, from action to wisdom
The path of truth begins within
Pulina Pujaka teaches us
That pure intention makes goodness begin

[Chorus]

Spread the sacred sand, cleanse the heart
Let wisdom shine and darkness depart
Do not look down on a little good deed
A loving heart is all we need

Not for riches, not for fame
But to rise beyond the world of pain
Let faith guide us, let wisdom shine
Toward freedom from the endless cycle of time

[Verse 3]

He knew the heavens, he knew great power
A universal king in another hour
But worldly glory could never be
The final truth of eternity

He left the world and walked the path
Through insight, wisdom, and mindful heart
He conquered craving, he ended pain
And found the peace beyond the chain

[Bridge]

Fourfold wisdom, liberation's light
Six higher knowledges shining bright
A journey completed, the work was done
The truth revealed beneath the sun

[Final Chorus]

Spread the sacred sand, cleanse the heart
Let wisdom shine and darkness depart
Even the smallest deed can grow
When planted with love, its fruits will show

Not for riches, not for fame
But to end suffering and break the chain
Let faith guide us, let wisdom shine
The sacred path is yours and mine

Pulina Pujaka Thera: The Power of Faith Through a Simple Offering of Clean Sand

An inspiring Buddhist story from the Tipitaka, Volume 32, Khuddaka Nikaya, Apadana, Subhuti Vagga, No. 27.

1. Background and Story

The story of Pulina Pujaka Thera illustrates the power of faith, generosity, and wholesome intention.

During the time of Vipassi Buddha, the Bodhisatta's future disciple was born into a family and developed deep faith in the Buddha's teachings.

He went to the sacred Bodhi site, removed the old sand, and spread fresh, clean sand over the area. According to the commentary, he also decorated the place with flower garlands as an act of reverence.

Although his offering was simple and inexpensive, it was performed with sincere devotion.

According to his own account in the Tipitaka, the merit of this offering brought him freedom from unfortunate realms. In a later existence, he became a powerful universal monarch named Mahapulina.

Eventually, during the time of the present Buddha, he was born into a prosperous family, developed faith in the Buddha's teachings, renounced worldly life, and entered the monastic order.

Through the practice of insight meditation, he attained arahantship.

He declared that he had realized the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. His spiritual duties had been completed.

2. His Previous Lives and Spiritual Development

According to the commentary on the Pulina Pujaka Thera Apadana, his spiritual development can be summarized in four stages:

  1. The time of Vipassi Buddha: He cleaned the sacred grounds by removing old sand and spreading fresh white sand, accompanied by sincere devotion.

  2. The results of merit: He experienced heavenly happiness and later became a universal monarch endowed with the Seven Treasures.

  3. The time of the present Buddha: He was born into a wealthy family, developed faith, and ordained as a monk.

  4. The attainment of liberation: Through insight meditation, he attained arahantship and completed his spiritual journey.

His life demonstrates the development of spiritual qualities from faith and generosity to meditation, wisdom, and liberation.

3. Six Buddhist Lessons

First: Intention is the heart of merit.

The value of an offering is not measured merely by its material worth. Sincere intention is essential to wholesome action.

Second: Good deeds do not require great wealth.

Even simple acts, such as cleaning a temple, caring for nature, or helping others, can become opportunities for doing good.

Third: Worship through action.

True reverence is expressed not only through words but also through practical actions that benefit sacred places and communities.

Fourth: Actions have consequences.

Wholesome actions are important causes of beneficial results, although karmic results depend on many conditions.

Fifth: Worldly prosperity is not the ultimate goal.

Material wealth and power are temporary. The ultimate goal of Buddhist practice is liberation from suffering.

Sixth: Progress from faith to wisdom.

Faith inspires wholesome action, while meditation and wisdom lead the practitioner toward enlightenment.

4. Application to Modern Society and Artificial Intelligence

The story of Pulina Pujaka Thera offers an important lesson for modern society.

Removing old sand and spreading clean sand can symbolize removing harmful habits and replacing them with wholesome thoughts and actions.

This principle can also be applied to artificial intelligence.

A Buddhist-inspired AI system, such as the proposed Buddhist Wisdom Artificial Intelligence Maha AI Plus, should emphasize:

  • Accuracy and integrity of information.

  • Transparency and accountability.

  • Ethical use of technology.

  • Compassion and benefits for humanity.

  • Wisdom in decision-making.

Technology should not be evaluated solely by its computational power. It should also be judged by whether it contributes to human well-being.

Conclusion

The story of Pulina Pujaka Thera teaches that even a small act of goodness, when performed with sincere intention, can become a foundation for spiritual development. However, the highest Buddhist goal is not worldly prosperity but the wisdom that leads to liberation from suffering.
