[(Verse 1)]
Beside the Candabhaga River flowing,
I saw the Buddha, peaceful and glowing.
A heart awakened, a faith so bright,
A path of wisdom shining through the night.
[(Verse 2)]
He crossed the ocean of suffering,
And showed the world the path of awakening.
He conquered passions, He found true peace,
And taught all beings how to find release.
[(Pre-Chorus)]
A single flower in my hand,
A heart of faith, a sacred stand.
I offered Timira with devotion,
And bowed before the ocean of compassion.
[(Chorus)]
Oh, flower of faith, forever bloom,
Bring light into the darkest room.
Though petals fade and seasons fly,
The seeds of goodness never die.
Give with kindness, live with grace,
Let wisdom guide the human race.
Beyond all suffering, beyond all pain,
Nirvana is the highest gain.
[(Verse 3)]
Through countless lives, the seeds were growing,
Through human worlds and heavens flowing.
Until Gautama's teaching came,
I entered the path and found the flame.
[(Bridge)]
Fourfold wisdom, eight liberations,
Six higher knowledges, realization.
The work is done, the journey complete,
The chains of craving lie at my feet.
[(Final Chorus)]
Oh, flower of faith, forever shine,
Let compassion guide mankind.
Not wealth or power, not worldly fame,
But freedom from desire is the highest aim.
May every heart awaken and see,
The truth of love and harmony.
From faith to wisdom, from darkness to light,
May all beings find peace and insight.
Timirapupphiya Thera: The Power of a Single Flower Offered with Pure Faith to the Buddha Siddhattha
A simple offering can become a profound expression of faith and wisdom. The story of Venerable Timirapupphiya Thera, recorded in the Khuddaka Nikaya, Apadana, Book 32 of the Pali Tipitaka, illustrates the spiritual significance of generosity, reverence, wholesome intention, and the cultivation of wisdom leading toward liberation.
Historical Background
According to the Timirapupphiya Thera Apadana, in a former existence, the Venerable Thera was traveling along the banks of the Candabhaga River when he encountered a radiant and peaceful ascetic.
Upon seeing the holy figure, he developed deep confidence and reflected on the qualities of the Buddha.
He thought that the Blessed One had crossed beyond suffering and could guide other beings across the ocean of samsara. Having disciplined himself, the Buddha could teach others to discipline themselves. Having attained peace, he could guide others toward peace. Having attained liberation, he could show others the path to liberation.
Moved by this reflection, he gathered Timira flowers and scattered them over the head of Buddha Siddhattha as an offering.
He then respectfully joined his palms, circumambulated the Buddha, bowed at the Master's feet, and departed.
The Apadana further recounts that shortly afterward, he was attacked by a wild animal and fell into a ravine.
Nevertheless, he declared that his flower offering had resulted in freedom from unfortunate destinations throughout the cycles of existence described in his account.
He also recalled seven universal monarchs named Maharaha, endowed with the seven treasures and great power.
Ultimately, he attained the four analytical discriminations (Patisambhida), the eight liberations (Vimokkha), and the six higher knowledges (Abhinna).
He concluded by declaring that he had fulfilled the Buddha's teaching.
Commentary and His Spiritual Biography
The commentary provides further details about his spiritual journey.
During the era of Buddha Siddhattha, he was born into a respectable family. After experiencing household life, he recognized the disadvantages of sensual pleasures and renounced worldly life to become an ascetic.
He lived near the Candabhaga River and later traveled to the Himalayan forest, where he encountered Buddha Siddhattha and offered the Timira flowers.
As a result of his accumulated wholesome deeds, he experienced happiness in celestial and human realms.
In the era of Gautama Buddha, he was reborn into a good family, developed faith in the Buddha's teaching, entered the monastic order, and attained arahantship after a short period.
The commentary thus presents him as an arahant disciple who fulfilled the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice.
Five Buddhist Lessons
Faith Guided by Wisdom: True faith should arise from understanding and reflection.
Generosity with a Pure Heart: The value of giving depends not merely on the material offering but also on the intention behind it.
Respect and Reverence: Respect should be expressed through body, speech, and mind.
Continuous Cultivation of Goodness: Small wholesome actions can contribute to long-term spiritual development.
Liberation as the Ultimate Goal: Material prosperity and heavenly happiness are not the final destination; freedom from defilements is the highest objective.
Buddhist Artificial Intelligence and Modern Society
The story can also inspire ethical applications of artificial intelligence.
AI with Wisdom: Encourage critical thinking and reliable knowledge.
AI with Compassion: Use technology to reduce suffering and inequality.
AI with Ethics: Promote honesty, responsibility, and non-harm.
AI for Lifelong Learning: Support continuous education.
AI for Peace: Use technology to foster understanding and peaceful coexistence.
Artificial intelligence should remain a tool that supports human learning and ethical development, rather than being confused with spiritual realization.
