[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

[Chorus]

[Outro]

Song: Mending the Broken String Inspired by The Khuddakanikaya, Jātaka, Dukanipātajataka, Ruhaka Vagga

[Verse 1]

When careless words have torn a heart apart,
When yesterday still leaves a scar,
Let not anger rule the mind,
Leave a little room for love to shine.

A broken string can join again,
A wounded heart can heal from pain,
If we listen, if we care,
A path to peace may still be there.

[Pre-Chorus]
Look beyond the face we see,
Choose what’s right with honesty,
Power must be fair and wise,
Truth should never wear a disguise.

[Chorus]
Mend the broken string with understanding,
Let compassion calm the storm inside,
Choose the path of truth, keep on standing,
Let the light of wisdom be your guide.

A true friend stays when skies are gray,
Goodness shines through what we do each day,
When we live with kindness, courage, and care,
A better world becomes a hope we share.

[Verse 2]
Those who lead must serve with care,
Justice is a trust we all must share,
Hear the words that warn of harm,
Let wise counsel keep you calm.

Do not judge by wealth or fame,
Look for truth behind the name,
Every choice can shape the way
We build a brighter world today.

[Bridge]
Ten old stories, wisdom shining through,
A timeless lesson for me and you,
With mindful hearts and hands that do what’s right,
We can turn the darkest road to light.

[Outro]
A broken string may rise once more,
A gentle heart can heal what came before,
With wisdom, patience, and love to bring,

We find new hope in a mended string.

Ruhaka Vagga: Ten Jataka Tales Offer Lessons on Restraint, Wise Judgment, True Friendship, and Righteous Conduct

The Ruhaka Vagga, found in Tipitaka Volume 27, Sutta Pitaka Volume 19, Khuddaka Nikaya, Jataka, within the Dukanipata collection, brings together ten Jataka stories. These narratives explore practical lessons about controlling emotions, evaluating people wisely, exercising authority fairly, listening to sound advice, and maintaining moral conduct.

The ten stories are the Ruhaka Jataka, Sirikālakaṇṇi Jataka, Cullapaduma Jataka, Maṇicora Jataka, Pabbatūpatthara Jataka, Valāhakassa Jataka, Mittāmitta Jataka, Rādha Jataka, Gahapati Jataka, and Sādhusīla Jataka. Although each story has its own setting and message, together they encourage readers to think carefully before making decisions and to act with responsibility toward others.

The Ruhaka Jataka: Do Not Let Anger Control You

The Ruhaka Jataka concerns reconciliation between a husband and wife. It uses the image of a broken bowstring that can be joined again to suggest that damaged relationships may sometimes be repaired. The lesson is to seek understanding and respond with patience rather than allowing anger to dominate. Reconciliation, however, should involve addressing problems appropriately, not simply ignoring the harm that has occurred.

The Sirikālakaṇṇi Jataka: Reflecting on Character and Compatibility

This story presents Sirī and Kāḷakaṇṇī and raises questions about differing personal qualities. It invites readers to consider character and suitability when making judgments, rather than relying only on outward appearance or superficial advantages.

The Cullapaduma and Maṇicora Jatakas: Consider the Consequences of Actions

The Cullapaduma Jataka invites reflection on conduct and the consequences of decisions. The Maṇicora Jataka, meanwhile, refers to a king who fails to rule according to righteousness. It highlights the harm that can arise when authority is exercised without justice. Those in positions of power should uphold what is right and consider the effects of their decisions on others instead of acting arbitrarily.

The Pabbatūpatthara and Valāhakassa Jatakas: Wise Judgment and Heeding Good Advice

The Pabbatūpatthara Jataka portrays animals approaching a pool guarded by a lion and offers a reflection on assessing circumstances and showing leniency where appropriate. The Valāhakassa Jataka contrasts those who disregard good guidance with those who follow it, illustrating how listening to sound advice can help people avoid danger.

The Mittāmitta, Rādha, Gahapati, and Sādhusīla Jatakas: Relationships and Moral Character

These four stories complete the Ruhaka Vagga and invite reflection on friendship, conduct toward others, everyday life, and the importance of good character. Read together with the other tales in this collection, they encourage readers to consider what makes a friendship sincere and how moral values should be demonstrated through daily actions.

Practical Lessons for Modern Society

The teachings drawn from the Ruhaka Vagga can be applied in at least four ways:

  1. Mindfulness and restraint: When conflict arises, pause before speaking or acting so that anger does not make the situation worse.

  2. Wise judgment: Do not judge people or situations solely by appearances or claims. Consider behavior, reasons, and likely consequences.

  3. Commitment to justice: People entrusted with responsibility or authority should act fairly and avoid favoring themselves or their associates.

  4. Openness to good advice: Listen to reasonable warnings and use them as opportunities to improve personal conduct and relationships.

The Ruhaka Vagga is therefore more than a collection of ancient tales. It offers reflections relevant to modern life—from resolving family disagreements and choosing friends to exercising authority and fulfilling social responsibilities. Studying these Jatakas thoughtfully and applying their lessons appropriately can encourage people to live together with reason, compassion, and fairness.

[Pre-Chorus]

[Chorus]

[Bridge]

[Chorus

[Outro]

Song: A Friend Who Lights the Way Inspired by The Khuddakanikaya, Jātaka, Dukanipātajataka, Santhava Vagga

[(Intro)]

Life's a journey, long and wide,
Who will walk here by our side?
Who will guide us when we fall,
Who will answer when we call?

[(Verse 1)]

Do not trust just words that shine,
Look for truth in every sign.
A faithful friend will help you stand,
Reach for you with a helping hand.

Good friends tell us when we're wrong,
Give us courage to grow strong.
With their wisdom, we can see,
A better path for you and me.

[(Verse 2)]

Life is changing every day,
Time keeps moving on its way.
Do not waste the days we hold,
Let our hearts be kind and bold.

When danger comes, don't rush ahead,
Think with care before you've said
Or done a thing that brings regret,
Choose the wisest path instead.

[(Chorus)]

A friend who lights the way,
Brings hope into our darkest day.
With wisdom, kindness, hearts held true,
We find the strength to make it through.

A friend who lights the way,
Reminds us what we should not trade.
For wealth or pride will fade away,
But goodness lives beyond the day.

[(Verse 3)]

When success comes, stay humble still,
Let your heart be free from pride and ill.
Money cannot make you wise,
Kindness is the greater prize.

Send your love to all who live,
Take no more than you can give.
Let compassion lead your heart,
Let a peaceful world begin to start.

[(Chorus)]

A friend who lights the way,
Brings hope into our darkest day.
With wisdom, kindness, hearts held true,
We find the strength to make it through.

A friend who lights the way,
Reminds us what we should not trade.
For wealth or pride will fade away,
But goodness lives beyond the day.

[(Bridge)]

Ten old stories, lessons clear,
Choose good friends and keep them near.
Life is brief, so do what's right,
Fill the world with love and light.

[(Final Chorus)]

A friend who lights the way,
Helps us grow with every day.
With loving-kindness as our guide,
Let truth and peace walk by our side.

A friend who lights the way,
A light that never fades away.
Through every season, come what may,
Let goodness guide us every day.

[(Outro)]

Step by step and hand in hand,
Let compassion cross the land.
With a wise and caring heart,
We can make a brighter start.

Santhava Vagga: Ten Jataka Tales Teach the Value of Good Companions, Mindfulness, and Compassion

Ancient Buddhist stories encourage wise friendships, careful judgment, moral responsibility, and kindness toward all living beings.

Santhava Vagga is a section of the Dukanipata in the Khuddaka Nikaya, part of the Sutta Pitaka, recorded in Volume 27 of the Thai Tipitaka edition. It consists of ten Jataka tales: the Indasamānagotta Jataka, Santhava Jataka, Susima Jataka, Gijjha Jataka, Nakula Jataka, Upasālaka Jataka, Samiddhi Jataka, Sakuṇagghi Jataka, Araka Jataka, and Kakaṇṭaka Jataka.

Together, these narratives offer reflections on friendship, human behavior, vigilance, the uncertainty of life, and the importance of maintaining ethical principles. Their lessons invite readers to consider how personal choices and relationships influence both individual well-being and the wider community.

Lessons from the Ten Jataka Tales

1. Indasamānagotta Jataka — Choose Good Companions

This story warns against close association with people whose conduct is harmful and encourages friendship with those who share qualities such as virtue, wisdom, and learning. Good companionship can support a more wholesome and fulfilling life.

2. Santhava Jataka — Choose Relationships Wisely

The tale encourages readers to consider the effects of close relationships. Familiarity alone does not guarantee that an association is beneficial; character and conduct also matter.

3. Susima Jataka — Exercise Sound Judgment

This story invites reflection on decision-making and responsibility. Those who hold positions of influence should consider fairness, reason, and the effects of their choices on others.

4. Gijjha Jataka — Look Ahead and Stay Alert

The tale of the vulture encourages readers to remain aware of their circumstances, recognize potential dangers, and avoid careless decisions.

5. Nakula Jataka — Do Not Trust Without Discernment

This story warns against placing unquestioning trust in others. Relationships should be guided by thoughtful observation and an understanding of people's behavior.

6. Upasālaka Jataka — Preserve Moral Principles

The tale encourages reflection on the importance of maintaining ethical values rather than abandoning them for immediate or temporary advantages.

7. Samiddhi Jataka — Remember the Uncertainty of Life

Life is unpredictable, and no one knows with certainty when it will end. This reflection encourages people to use their time meaningfully and cultivate goodness without unnecessary delay.

8. Sakuṇagghi Jataka — Recognize Your Limits and Avoid Danger

The story of the hawk encourages awareness of one's circumstances and limitations. Recognizing danger and acting with appropriate caution can help prevent unnecessary harm.

9. Araka Jataka — Extend Loving-Kindness to All Beings

This tale emphasizes the practice of loving-kindness beyond one's immediate circle, encouraging goodwill toward all living beings and a way of life based on non-harm.

10. Kakaṇṭaka Jataka — Avoid Arrogance After Gaining Benefits

The story invites reflection on how even a small gain can change a person's attitude. Material benefits or success should not become reasons to look down on others or abandon humility.

Applying Buddhist Teachings to Modern Life

The broader lessons of Santhava Vagga can be applied in four practical ways.

First, cultivate good friendships. Choose companions whose conduct encourages honesty, wisdom, and personal growth.

Second, live mindfully. Assess risks, examine information carefully, and prepare for changing circumstances rather than acting carelessly.

Third, preserve virtue and practice loving-kindness. Treat others with respect, avoid harmful behavior, and remain humble even when successful.

Fourth, remember that life is impermanent. Make constructive use of the time available, fulfill responsibilities, and do not postpone opportunities to do good.

Conclusion

Santhava Vagga offers enduring reflections on friendship, vigilance, humility, compassion, and ethical conduct. These themes remain relevant in family life, professional relationships, and the broader community.

By choosing good companions, acting with mindfulness, recognizing life's uncertainty, and treating others with kindness, people can strengthen their relationships and contribute to a more considerate and peaceful society.

Song: The Light of Wisdom Inspired by The Khuddakanikaya, Jātaka, Dukanipātajataka, Asadisa Vagga

[(Intro)]

Across the years, the stories shine,
A timeless truth, a guiding sign.
Through every choice and road we take,
Wisdom grows with each mistake.

[(Verse 1)]

A prince stood strong, his skill was rare,
Yet mercy showed the heart he bore.
He won his battles through his might,
But chose compassion over spite.

A mighty elephant faced the gate,
Its teacher called it to be brave.
When courage meets a steady mind,
A path through fear we all can find.

[(Verse 2)]

Not every shining thing is gold,
Not every tale deserves to be told.
Look beyond the face we see,
Seek the truth and set your spirit free.

Choose good friends who help you grow,
Learn from every seed you sow.
When restless thoughts disturb the mind,
Pause and seek the truth inside.

[(Chorus)]

The light of wisdom, lead the way,
Guide our hearts through night and day.
Let truth and kindness make us strong,
Help us choose the right, not wrong.

The light of wisdom, clear and bright,
Turn our doubts to paths of light.
With honest hearts and spirits free,
Build a world of harmony.

[(Verse 3)]

Let virtue be the roots we grow,
Let mindful thoughts guide all we know.
No mask can hide the truth for long,
No pride can make a false thing strong.

When we stumble, rise once more,
Learn the lessons life has stored.
With every act of truth and care,
We make a better world to share.

[(Chorus)]

The light of wisdom, lead the way,
Guide our hearts through night and day.
Let truth and kindness make us strong,
Help us choose the right, not wrong.

The light of wisdom, clear and bright,
Turn our doubts to paths of light.
With honest hearts and spirits free,
Build a world of harmony.

[(Bridge)]

Ten tales, ten lessons, one clear call,
Be wise and kind, be true through all.
Let courage walk with peace of mind,
Leave selfish pride and lies behind.

[(Final Chorus)]

The light of wisdom, let it shine,
Bring a little peace to humankind.
Through every challenge, come what may,
Let virtue guide us on our way.

[(Outro)]

The years may pass, the tales remain,
Like gentle sunlight after rain.
With wisdom, truth, and love to give,
We learn the art of how to live.

Asadisa Vagga: Ten Jataka Tales Highlight Wisdom, Virtue, and Self-Discipline

A Buddhist literary tradition offers timeless reflections on personal conduct, wise decision-making, and the importance of moral integrity.

The Asadisa Vagga is a section of the Dukanipata in the Khuddaka Nikaya, part of the Sutta Pitaka, found in Volume 27 of the Thai Tipitaka edition. It contains ten Jataka tales: the Asadisa Jataka, Sangamavacara Jataka, Valodaka Jataka, Giridatta Jataka, Anabhirati Jataka, Dadhivahana Jataka, Catumattha Jataka, Sihakotthuka Jataka, Sihacamma Jataka, and Silanisamsa Jataka.

These traditional Buddhist narratives invite readers to reflect on human behavior, the consequences of actions, and the role of wisdom in responding to life's challenges. Their lessons can be explored through the original texts and commentaries, which provide important background and interpretive context.

Lessons from the Ten Jataka Tales

1. Asadisa Jataka — Excellence with Restraint

The story portrays Prince Asadisa as an exceptionally skilled archer who defeats his enemies without harming others unnecessarily. His example encourages readers to develop their abilities while exercising restraint and responsibility.

2. Sangamavacara Jataka — Courage and Determination

This tale concerns an elephant entering battle and the guidance given by its trainer. It invites reflection on courage, perseverance, and the importance of overcoming hesitation when facing a difficult task.

3. Valodaka Jataka — Character and Self-Control

The narrative contrasts the reactions of donkeys and fine Sindh horses after drinking different kinds of liquid. It offers a traditional reflection on differences in temperament, discipline, and the ability to remain composed.

4. Giridatta Jataka — The Influence of Others

The story encourages reflection on how guidance, habits, and the examples set by others can influence behavior. It highlights the value of sound judgment when learning from people around us.

5. Anabhirati Jataka — Understanding Dissatisfaction

This tale provides an opportunity to consider dissatisfaction and mental restlessness, encouraging reflection on the causes of discontent and the importance of developing a balanced mind.

6. Dadhivahana Jataka — Learning from Experience

The narrative invites readers to consider how actions and circumstances shape outcomes and how experience can inform future decisions.

7. Catumattha Jataka — Discernment and Consequences

This story can be approached as an invitation to examine situations carefully, distinguish benefit from harm, and consider the consequences of one's choices.

8. Sihakotthuka Jataka — Appearance and Reality

The tale encourages readers to look beyond outward appearances and examine the reality behind what they see or hear.

9. Sihacamma Jataka — The Danger of Deception

The narrative illustrates the risks of pretending to be something one is not. It reminds readers that deception can undermine trust and eventually lead to adverse consequences.

10. Silanisamsa Jataka — The Benefits of Moral Conduct

This tale emphasizes the importance of virtuous behavior and the value of associating with good and trustworthy people.

Applying Buddhist Principles to Modern Life

The Asadisa Vagga offers several themes that can be applied to contemporary life.

Wisdom and mindfulness: Think carefully before speaking or acting. Consider the available facts, possible consequences, and effects on others.

Ethical conduct: Honesty, restraint, and integrity help build trust in families, workplaces, and communities.

Learning from good examples: Learn from others while exercising independent judgment rather than imitating every behavior uncritically.

Learning from mistakes: Examine the causes of setbacks, acknowledge shortcomings, and use experience to make better decisions.

Conclusion

The Asadisa Vagga preserves traditional Buddhist reflections on skill, courage, discernment, self-control, and moral conduct. Although these stories originate in an ancient literary tradition, their themes remain relevant to questions of personal responsibility and social relationships today.

Their broader message encourages people to look beyond appearances, act with wisdom, cultivate virtue, and consider how their choices affect others.
