Kindada Sutta: The Power of Giving as the Foundation of World Peace
The Kindada Sutta, found in the Samyutta Nikaya of the Pali Canon, presents a profound teaching that true giving is not merely the sharing of material possessions but the cultivation of lasting well-being for humanity.
In the discourse, a deva asks the Buddha: What gift gives strength? What gift gives beauty? What gift gives happiness? What gift gives sight? And what kind of giving is regarded as giving everything?
The Buddha replies that giving food is giving strength, because it sustains life. Giving clothing is giving beauty and dignity. Giving transportation brings happiness by making life easier. Giving lamps or light is giving sight, because light enables vision and wisdom. Providing shelter is considered giving everything, since it offers security, stability, and the necessities of life.
Above all, the Buddha declares that one who teaches the Dhamma gives the Deathless—the highest gift—because the Dhamma liberates people from greed, hatred, and delusion, the root causes of suffering and conflict.
Applied to today's world, the Kindada Sutta offers a practical framework for building global peace. Ending hunger, reducing poverty, ensuring access to housing, education, transportation, and energy, while promoting moral education and compassion, can create a more peaceful and harmonious society.
The Sutta reminds humanity that genuine giving is not only about material support but also about creating opportunities, inspiring hope, and cultivating wisdom. When people share both resources and virtue, inequality decreases, conflicts are reduced, and the world moves closer to lasting and sustainable peace.

พระพุทธศาสนาได้สะท้อนหลักคิดสำคัญด้านการสร้างสังคมแห่งสันติผ่าน กินททสูตร ในพระไตรปิฎก เล่มที่ ๑๕ พระสุตตันตปิฎก เล่มที่ ๗ สังยุตตนิกาย สคาถวรรค ซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นว่า "การให้" มิใช่เพียงการแบ่งปันวัตถุ แต่เป็นการสร้างคุณค่าที่เกื้อกูลต่อชีวิตและสังคมอย่างยั่งยืน

พระพุทธองค์ตรัสตอบว่า ผู้ให้อาหารชื่อว่าให้กำลัง เพราะอาหารหล่อเลี้ยงชีวิตและสร้างพลังในการดำรงอยู่ ผู้ให้ผ้าย่อมชื่อว่าให้วรรณะ เพราะเครื่องนุ่งห่มช่วยรักษาศักดิ์ศรีและความเหมาะสมของมนุษย์ ผู้ให้ยานพาหนะย่อมชื่อว่าให้ความสุข เพราะช่วยให้การเดินทางและการดำรงชีวิตสะดวกขึ้น ผู้ให้ประทีปหรือโคมไฟย่อมชื่อว่าให้จักษุ เพราะแสงสว่างนำไปสู่การมองเห็นและปัญญา ส่วนผู้ให้ที่พักอาศัยชื่อว่าให้ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง เนื่องจากเป็นรากฐานแห่งความปลอดภัย ความมั่นคง และคุณภาพชีวิต
อย่างไรก็ตาม พระพุทธองค์ทรงยกย่องสูงสุดว่า ผู้พร่ำสอนธรรมะคือผู้ให้อมฤตธรรม เพราะธรรมะเป็นแสงสว่างแห่งปัญญาที่นำมนุษย์ให้พ้นจากความทุกข์ ความโลภ ความโกรธ และความหลง ซึ่งเป็นต้นเหตุของความขัดแย้งทั้งในระดับบุคคล สังคม และประชาคมโลก
นักวิชาการด้านสันติศึกษามองว่า หลักธรรมในกินททสูตรสามารถประยุกต์ใช้กับการสร้างสันติภาพโลกได้อย่างเป็นรูปธรรม โดยการร่วมกันขจัดความหิวโหย ลดความยากจน ส่งเสริมการเข้าถึงที่อยู่อาศัย การศึกษา ระบบคมนาคม และพลังงานที่ทั่วถึง ควบคู่กับการเผยแพร่คุณธรรมและการเรียนรู้เพื่อสร้างจิตสำนึกแห่งเมตตาและความรับผิดชอบต่อส่วนรวม
