Song: The Path of Balanced Effort Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Upāli Vagga, Sona Koṭiyavessa Thera Apadāna

[Verse 1]

In ages past, a faithful heart
Built a sacred path with loving care
White lime shone beneath the sky
And flowers bloomed with colors bright

He offered all with joyful mind
To Anomadassī, the Buddha divine
A noble deed, a seed of light
That crossed through countless lives of time

[Verse 2]

Born as Sona, wealthy and strong
A life of comfort all along
Yet worldly pleasures could not stay
He chose the Dhamma and walked away

He walked and walked with endless might
Until his feet were wounded and tired
But wisdom came to calm his mind
And showed the balance he must find

[Chorus]

Walk the path, but walk with care
Let wisdom guide you everywhere
Too much effort can disturb the mind
Too little effort leaves truth behind

Like the strings of a lute, set them right
Let faith and wisdom shine their light
With mindfulness and concentration
We move beyond all hesitation

[Verse 3]

The Buddha taught with gentle grace
A lesson that all hearts embrace
A string too tight will break apart
A string too loose cannot make art

So balance effort with inner peace
Let restless thoughts and tensions cease
With faith and wisdom hand in hand
The path to freedom we understand

[Bridge]

Not wealth, not power, not worldly fame
Can free the heart from endless pain
Through mindful effort, clear and true
A peaceful mind will guide us through

[Final Chorus]

Walk the path, but walk with care
Let wisdom guide you everywhere
Sona showed the way to see
That balanced effort sets us free

From every burden, every chain
Beyond desire, beyond all pain
When all defilements disappear
The deathless peace is finally here

[Outro]

Right effort, wisdom, peace of mind
The highest truth is ours to find
A balanced heart, a life made bright
The path to Nibbāna, the path of light.

Sona Koṭiyavessa Thera: From a Devoted Donor to an Arahant of Great Energy

1. Background and Past Meritorious Deeds

The story of Venerable Sona Koṭiyavessa Thera appears in the Apadāna, Khuddaka Nikāya, Sutta Piṭaka, Volume 32, Upāli Vagga, in the account of Sona Koṭiyavessa Thera (42).

According to his Apadāna, in a previous life during the dispensation of Anomadassī Buddha, he constructed a beautiful walking meditation path, carefully plastered with white lime. He decorated it with flowers of various colors and prepared an ornamental canopy above it.

With a joyful and devoted heart, he offered this place to the Buddha. Anomadassī Buddha compassionately accepted his offering and predicted that this meritorious deed would bring him happiness and prosperity through many future existences.

His good karma brought him heavenly and human prosperity. Eventually, however, his spiritual journey culminated in his rebirth during the dispensation of Gotama Buddha, when he became known as Sona.

He entered the monastic order, cultivated meditation, and developed profound wisdom until he attained Arahantship, completely destroying all mental defilements and taints.

2. His Life as a Disciple of Gotama Buddha

Venerable Sona Koḷivisa, also known as Sukhumāla Sona, was born into a wealthy family in Campā, in the kingdom of Aṅga.

He enjoyed an extremely comfortable life, with three magnificent palaces designed for the different seasons. His hands and feet were exceptionally soft, and his lifestyle was characterized by luxury.

After hearing the Buddha's teachings, he developed faith and decided to renounce worldly pleasures and become a monk.

He then practiced walking meditation with extraordinary determination. His feet became injured and began to bleed, yet he continued striving without attaining the results he expected.

Seeing his discouragement, the Buddha visited him and taught him through the simile of a musical instrument.

The Buddha explained that a string that is too tight or too loose cannot produce beautiful music. Only a properly adjusted string produces a harmonious sound.

Likewise, spiritual effort must be balanced. Excessive effort can lead to restlessness, while insufficient effort leads to laziness.

The five spiritual faculties must also be developed in harmony:

  1. Faith (Saddhā)

  2. Energy (Viriya)

  3. Mindfulness (Sati)

  4. Concentration (Samādhi)

  5. Wisdom (Paññā)

Following this guidance, Sona adjusted his practice and eventually attained Arahantship.

3. His Distinction and Spiritual Excellence

The Buddha declared Venerable Sona Koḷivisa foremost among the monks who were energetic and resolute in their spiritual efforts.

His life demonstrates that true perseverance is not simply about working harder. It requires wisdom, mindfulness, concentration, and balance.

4. Essential Buddhist Teachings

His story offers six important lessons:

  • Generosity: Giving and supporting the welfare of others is a foundation of wholesome action.

  • Right Intention: The quality of giving depends greatly on the purity of one's mind.

  • Right Effort: Perseverance must be guided by wisdom.

  • Balanced Spiritual Faculties: Faith, energy, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom should support one another.

  • Overcoming Difficulties: Setbacks can become opportunities for learning and improvement.

  • Liberation: The highest goal of Buddhist practice is freedom from all defilements and the cycle of rebirth.

5. Lessons for Modern Society

The story of Venerable Sona Koṭiyavessa Thera remains relevant today.

In education, business, leadership, technology, and artificial intelligence, success should not be measured only by speed, productivity, or achievement.

It should also be measured by wisdom, ethical responsibility, balance, and the benefits created for humanity.

The central message is that true success comes from persistent effort guided by mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom.
