Song: Seven Flowers of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Timirapupphiyavagga, Gatasaññaka Therāpadāna

[Verse 1]

In a distant age, so long ago,
A child of seven chose the path to go.
He left his home, embraced the way,
And walked in faith from day to day.

Before the Buddha Tissa bright,
An ocean of virtue, wisdom, and light,
He bowed with love and offered seven flowers,
Rising gently through the heavenly showers.

[Chorus]

Seven flowers floating in the sky,
Seven dreams of faith that never die.
Though small the gift, the heart was true,
A path of wisdom shining through.

Flowers may fade, but goodness stays,
A light that shines through countless days.
With faith and wisdom as our guide,
We walk the path with peace inside.

[Verse 2]

Through countless ages, time rolled on,
The seeds of goodness carried on.
Three mighty kings named Aggisikha
Were born through karma's ancient power.

But worldly glory was not the end,
Nor riches, power, nor earthly fame.
The higher truth became his goal,
To free the heart and purify the soul.

[Chorus]

Seven flowers floating in the sky,
Seven dreams of faith that never die.
Though small the gift, the heart was true,
A path of wisdom shining through.

[Bridge]

A child can plant a seed of light,
A simple deed can make things right.
Let wisdom guide what we create,
Let kindness shape our human fate.

Beyond all wealth, beyond all pride,
The truth of freedom lies inside.

[Final Verse]

Gatasaññaka, your story lives,
A timeless lesson that still gives.
The flowers offered long ago,
Still teach the world the way to grow.

With wisdom, peace, and hearts sincere,
May goodness blossom year by year.

Gatasaññaka Thera: The Seven Kanikāra Flowers and the Path to Enlightenment

Buddhist News and Dhamma Analysis | Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Volume 32

1. Background and Life Story

The story of Venerable Gatasaññaka Thera appears in the Gatasaññaka Therāpadāna, in the Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Volume 32 of the Pali Canon, within the Timirapupphiya Chapter, account number 82.

According to his account, he entered the monastic life at the age of seven. During the time of Tissa Buddha, he developed deep faith and devotion toward the Buddha, whose virtues were described as boundless as the ocean.

With a pure and joyful mind, the young novice bowed at the Buddha's feet and threw seven Kanikāra flowers into the air as an offering to the Enlightened One.

He also paid homage to the path walked by the Buddha, joining his hands in reverence and dedicating his act with sincere faith.

The elder recalled that the good deed he performed in that distant past brought significant karmic results. He stated that he did not experience unfortunate destinations as a result of that merit.

He further recounted that, eight aeons after the present one, three universal monarchs named Aggisikha arose, possessing the seven treasures and great power.

Ultimately, he attained the four analytical knowledges, the eight liberations, and the six higher knowledges. He declared that he had completed the Buddha's teaching.

2. The Dhamma Principles

Faith and devotion

The story demonstrates that spiritual development does not depend on age. Even a seven-year-old novice can cultivate profound faith and wholesome intentions.

Intention is central to merit

The offering of seven flowers was meaningful not because of their material value, but because of the sincere and wholesome intention behind the offering.

Respect and reverence

Bowing, offering flowers, and paying homage represent the cultivation of humility, gratitude, and respect.

The law of karma

The elder described the beneficial results of his past wholesome actions. His account illustrates the Buddhist teaching that intentional actions have consequences.

Liberation as the highest goal

The ultimate achievement was not worldly wealth or political power, but spiritual liberation through the development of wisdom.

3. The Elder's Buddhist Biography

The commentary explains that Gatasaññaka Thera had accumulated wholesome deeds under previous Buddhas, developing spiritual qualities that served as conditions for attaining Nibbāna.

During the time of Tissa Buddha, he was born into a family and entered the monastic order at the age of seven.

His early ordination reflected the spiritual conditions he had cultivated in previous existences.

The canonical account identifies him as an arahant who had completed the religious duties and attained:

  • Four analytical knowledges (Paṭisambhidā).

  • Eight liberations (Vimokkha).

  • Six higher knowledges (Abhiññā).

The available account does not specify further details about his final-life parents, birthplace, or other personal events.

4. Applying the Story to Modern Society and Buddhist AI

The story of Gatasaññaka Thera provides valuable guidance for modern society and artificial intelligence.

A small act performed with a wholesome intention can become a meaningful foundation for a greater good.

In the development of Buddhist AI, this principle can be translated into five ethical foundations:

  1. Faith and commitment to learning.

  2. Right intention in technological development.

  3. Truthful and responsible communication.

  4. Ethical actions that benefit humanity.

  5. Wisdom in evaluating information and making decisions.

Buddhist AI should not merely become more intelligent. It should also support human well-being, reduce suffering, promote peace, and encourage responsible use of knowledge.

The central message is that technology becomes truly valuable when intelligence is guided by wisdom and compassion.
