In this discourse, a deva presents a spiritual riddle to the Buddha: "The deep abyss has one root, two whirlpools, three stains, five coverings, and a sea that turns in twelve directions. The sage has crossed beyond it."
According to the traditional interpretation, the "one root" represents ignorance (avijjā), the fundamental cause of suffering and conflict. The "two whirlpools" symbolize attachment and aversion, the opposing forces that divide humanity. The "three stains" refer to greed, hatred, and delusion—the mental defilements that give rise to violence and injustice. The "five coverings" represent attachment to the five sense pleasures, while the "sea turning in twelve directions" symbolizes the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, the cycle through which suffering continues.
The "sage who has crossed beyond" represents one who has overcome ignorance through wisdom, broken the cycle of craving and attachment, and attained inner freedom.
