Song: The Voice of Dhamma Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Timirapupphiyavagga, Saddasaññaka Thera Apadāna

[Intro]

Upon the mountains, far away,
A hermit lived in peace each day.
Then Buddha Phussa's voice was heard,
Awakening his heart through sacred words.

[Verse 1]

Upon a bed of leaves he stayed,
Beneath the trees where shadows played.
No wealth, no fame, no worldly prize,
Just faith awakened in his eyes.

The Buddha spoke of truth and light,
His voice brought peace into the night.
The hermit's heart began to shine,
Inspired by the Dhamma divine.

[Chorus]

Let the Voice of Dhamma shine,
Bring the wisdom into mine.
In a world of endless noise,
Let the truth become our choice.

Listen deeply, think with care,
Let compassion fill the air.
Words may come and words may go,
But wisdom is the light we grow.

[Verse 2]

Ninety-two aeons passed away,
Yet wholesome deeds remained to stay.
In Gotama Buddha's time,
He walked the path of truth sublime.

He left the world and trained his mind,
Through insight, wisdom he would find.
He saw all things arise and cease,
And reached the state of perfect peace.

[Bridge]

Hear the Dhamma, understand,
Practice truth with heart and hand.
Let go of greed, let go of pride,
Let wisdom be your faithful guide.

[Final Chorus]

Let the Voice of Dhamma shine,
Bring the wisdom into mine.
In a world of endless noise,
Let the truth become our choice.

Listen deeply, think with care,
Let compassion fill the air.
The sound may fade, the words may end,
But wisdom stays until the end.

[Outro]

The voice of truth may fade away,
But wisdom grows with every day.
Listen, reflect, and walk the way,
Until all suffering fades away.

The Story of Saddasaññaka Thera: The Merit of Listening to the Buddha's Teaching

Buddhist News and Dhamma Commentary | Tipitaka Volume 32, Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Timirapupphiya Vagga, Discourse 88

1. Background and Historical Account

The Saddasaññaka Thera Apadāna tells the story of a hermit whose mind became deeply inspired by the voice of the Buddha while listening to a Dhamma discourse.

During the time of Buddha Phussa, the hermit lived in the Himalayan mountains. He rested and practiced meditation on a simple bed of leaves, living a secluded life close to nature.

One day, he heard the voice of the Blessed One, Buddha Phussa, delivering a Dhamma discourse.

The Buddha's voice inspired the hermit, and his mind became filled with faith, confidence, and spiritual joy.

Although the account does not describe any material offering, it emphasizes the wholesome mental quality arising from listening to the Buddha's teaching with a sincere and receptive heart.

According to his own testimony, this event occurred ninety-two aeons before the present aeon. Through this wholesome action, he declared that he had never experienced an unfortunate destination.

Eventually, he attained the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges. He declared that he had completed his spiritual duties under the Buddha's teaching.

2. Biography According to the Commentary

The commentary provides additional details about the elder's previous and final lives.

During the time of Buddha Phussa

He was born into a family and, upon reaching maturity, developed faith and renounced worldly life to become a hermit.

He lived in the Himalayan forest. One day, Buddha Phussa approached him out of compassion and delivered a Dhamma discourse.

After listening to the teaching, the hermit developed a serene and confident mind, becoming deeply inspired by the Dhamma.

He lived out his remaining lifespan and was subsequently reborn in heavenly realms, including the six sensual heavenly planes, as well as enjoying happiness in human existences.

During the time of Gotama Buddha

In the era of Gotama Buddha, he was born into a family. As he grew older, he developed faith in the Buddha's teaching and entered the monastic order.

He cultivated insight meditation, contemplating phenomena according to their true nature.

Through this practice, he attained arahantship and became free from mental defilements.

Later, he recollected his previous wholesome actions and joyfully proclaimed his past experience through the verses of the Saddasaññaka Thera Apadāna.

5. Conclusion

The story of Saddasaññaka Thera teaches us that listening to the Dhamma with a sincere and peaceful mind can become an important foundation for spiritual development.

The hermit lived far away in the Himalayan mountains, yet the sound of Buddha Phussa's teaching inspired his heart.

In the time of Gotama Buddha, he continued his spiritual journey through renunciation and insight meditation until he attained arahantship.

The story reminds us that in a world filled with information, arguments, advertisements, and digital noise, we should carefully choose what we listen to.

The central message: The sound of the Dhamma enters through the ears, but its true value emerges when wisdom arises in the heart.
