This article introduces the concept of Buddhist Artificial Intelligence (Buddhist AI), which integrates Eastern philosophical traditions with modern technological innovation in order to transcend the limitations of Western logic that relies primarily on binary notions of truth.
Central to this proposal is the application of Catuskoti Logic (the tetralemma), a philosophical framework that enables computer systems to interpret complex social contexts with greater flexibility and nuance. By moving beyond rigid true–false dichotomies, this approach allows artificial intelligence to better understand ambiguity, contradiction, and the dynamic nature of human societies.
The framework also aims to design algorithms grounded in the ethical principles of compassion and the reduction of suffering, helping to prevent biases and conflicts that may arise from machine-based decision-making. Furthermore, the integration of the Noble Eightfold Path as a guiding framework for AI development contributes to building trustworthiness and ethical responsibility within the software engineering process.
Ultimately, this conceptual innovation aspires to transform artificial intelligence into a tool for promoting global peace, while also challenging the intellectual monopoly of Western paradigms and reflecting the genuine diversity of human civilizations.
