English Translation
The Vekhanassa Sutta: The Quest for Ultimate Radiance and Global Peace in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
Scholars of Buddhism, ethics, and Artificial Intelligence have proposed applying the teachings of the Vekhanassa Sutta to the ethical development of AI, emphasizing that technological brilliance achieves its highest value only when guided by wisdom, honesty, and the pursuit of truth.
The discourse records a dialogue between the Buddha and the wandering ascetic Vekhanassa, who claimed to admire the "highest radiance" but was unable to explain its true nature. The Buddha responded by using a series of vivid metaphors, comparing the light of a firefly, a lamp, the moon, and finally the sun.
Through these comparisons, the Buddha demonstrated that worldly pleasures, although attractive, remain limited and imperfect. The supreme radiance is not external pleasure but the peace of liberation (Nibbāna), attained through the complete elimination of mental defilements.
