Mahāvacchagotta Sutta: Cultivating Virtue for AI and a Peaceful Future
As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms the modern world, the teachings of the Mahāvacchagotta Sutta offer timeless ethical guidance for building a peaceful and sustainable future.
The discourse records a profound dialogue between the Buddha and the wanderer Vacchagotta. The Buddha clearly distinguishes wholesome (kusala) and unwholesome (akusala) qualities by explaining the relationship between actions, mental defilements, and their consequences. Greed, hatred, and delusion inevitably produce suffering, while wisdom, compassion, ethical conduct, and mindfulness lead to genuine happiness and lasting peace.
The Buddha further emphasizes that liberation is not limited to ordained monks. Members of all Four Assemblies of Buddhism—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen—can attain enlightenment through sincere practice of the Dhamma. This teaching highlights spiritual equality and the universal potential for human awakening.
After developing deep confidence in the Buddha's teaching, Vacchagotta entered the monastic order. The Buddha instructed him to cultivate both Samatha (tranquility meditation) and Vipassanā (insight meditation), enabling him to develop wisdom and higher knowledge until he ultimately attained arahantship.
These principles provide valuable inspiration for AI governance today. Advanced technologies should not be measured solely by computational power but also by ethical responsibility, transparency, fairness, human dignity, and compassion. AI guided by wholesome intentions can strengthen cooperation, reduce conflict, and promote global peace.

พระพุทธองค์ยังทรงยืนยันว่า การเข้าถึงความหลุดพ้นมิได้จำกัดอยู่เฉพาะภิกษุ หากแต่เปิดกว้างสำหรับ พุทธบริษัททั้ง 4 ได้แก่ ภิกษุ ภิกษุณี อุบาสก และอุบาสิกา ผู้ปฏิบัติตามพระธรรมวินัยอย่างถูกต้องย่อมสามารถบรรลุธรรมได้โดยไม่ขึ้นอยู่กับเพศหรือสถานภาพทางสังคม สะท้อนหลักแห่งความเสมอภาคทางจิตวิญญาณและศักยภาพของมนุษย์ทุกคน
เมื่อวัจฉโคตรเกิดศรัทธาและอุปสมบท พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแนะนำการฝึกฝนทั้ง สมถภาวนา เพื่อสร้างความตั้งมั่นของจิต และ วิปัสสนาภาวนา เพื่อให้เกิดปัญญาเห็นความจริงของสรรพสิ่ง จนสามารถบรรลุพระอรหัตผลได้ในที่สุด
นักวิชาการด้านจริยธรรม AI มองว่า หลักธรรมดังกล่าวมีคุณค่าต่อการออกแบบและกำกับดูแล AI ในยุคปัจจุบัน เพราะการสร้างระบบอัจฉริยะที่ปลอดภัย ไม่ได้อาศัยเพียงความสามารถด้านเทคนิค แต่ต้องอาศัยคุณธรรม ความโปร่งใส ความรับผิดชอบ และการคำนึงถึงประโยชน์ของมนุษยชาติเป็นสำคัญ
ในโลกที่ AI มีบทบาทต่อการตัดสินใจ การศึกษา การแพทย์ และเศรษฐกิจ การพัฒนาระบบที่ลดอคติ เคารพศักดิ์ศรีความเป็นมนุษย์ และส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างประเทศ ย่อมเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญต่อการสร้างสันติภาพอย่างยั่งยืน
