Cūḷa-Vacchagotta Sutta: Right Understanding as the Foundation for Peace in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
The Cūḷa-Vacchagotta Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikāya of the Pāli Canon, presents a profound dialogue between the Buddha and the wanderer Vacchagotta concerning the true meaning of the Buddha's perfect knowledge.
The Buddha clarified that it is inaccurate to claim that He continuously knew everything at every moment. Instead, He explained that He possessed the Threefold True Knowledge (Tevijjā): the recollection of past lives, the knowledge of the passing away and rebirth of beings according to their actions, and the complete destruction of mental defilements leading to liberation.
The discourse further explains that liberation depends not on social status but on right view and right practice. Lay followers who still live worldly lives may accumulate wholesome karma leading to fortunate rebirths, while ascetics lacking right understanding cannot attain true liberation despite their outward religious appearance.
Applied to today's era of Artificial Intelligence, the Cūḷa-Vacchagotta Sutta teaches that information alone is not wisdom. AI systems should be designed not merely to process enormous amounts of data but to assist humanity with ethical reasoning, transparency, responsibility, and accurate understanding.
