AI for War Has Arrived—Will AI for Peace Catch Up?” Proposing a Framework of ‘Buddhist Artificial Intelligence’ as a New Path for the Digital Age

This article highlights how artificial intelligence technologies are being rapidly advanced for military missions and warfare, creating a deeply concerning ethical gap. While AI for war receives unprecedented levels of global military funding, AI for peace continues to suffer from limited budgets and insufficient institutional support.

In response, the author proposes the concept of “Buddhist Artificial Intelligence” as an alternative framework for grounding technology in moral foundations. Drawing upon core Buddhist principles—such as the cessation of suffering and non-harm—this approach seeks to embed ethical reasoning into algorithmic decision-making, rather than prioritizing profit or power alone.

Successful examples, such as the “Sabai Jai” chatbot, demonstrate that integrating Buddhist wisdom with digital innovation can genuinely foster inner peace and help reduce social conflict. This proposal thus represents a crucial turning point—redirecting AI from a potential instrument of destruction into a sustainable tool for peace and well-being for humanity in the future.
