This article examines the analysis of Buddhist logic within Thai academic circles, with particular emphasis on the Madhyamaka system of Nagarjuna. This tradition employs reasoning not as a tool for intellectual conquest in the manner of Western formal logic, but as a path toward liberation and the realization of Sunyata (emptiness).
The discussion highlights the role of Sathien Phothinanta as a foundational figure in shaping Thai understanding of Mahayana philosophy, as well as Chamnong Thongprasert, who systematically integrated the study of logic into Thailand’s monastic education system.
The catukoi (tetralemma) logical framework is presented as a method for dismantling rigid attachments to notions of self and for illuminating the interdependent structure of reality in accordance with the principle of dependent origination (paticca-samuppada).
Ultimately, in this perspective, logic functions as an epistemological instrument—a raft that enables human beings to cross beyond the limitations of language and conceptual thought, serving solely as a means to approach ultimate truth.
