Song: The Conch of Faith Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Sudhāvagga, Buddhupatthāka Therāpadāna

(Verse 1)

In the time of Vipassī Buddha,
A humble soul stood with devotion.
No gold or jewels, no precious treasure,
Just a conch and a heart of devotion.

(Verse 2)

He blew the conch before the Teacher,
A sound of faith that filled the air.
He served the Buddha day by day,
With humble hands and loving care.

(Pre-Chorus)

Use what you have, give what you can,
A simple gift can make a stand.
Your art, your skills, your helping hand,
Can bring goodness across the land.

(Chorus)

The conch of faith, let it ring,
Let the sound of goodness sing.
From a humble heart, a noble way,
A little light can brighten the day.

The conch of faith, the sound of grace,
A path of wisdom we can embrace.
Use your talents, let kindness grow,
And let the Dhamma guide your soul.

(Verse 3)

As Madhussara, he joined the order,
He walked the path with wisdom bright.
Madhurassara, the noble elder,
Found freedom through the Dhamma's light.

(Bridge)

Four analytical knowledges,
Eight liberations shining clear.
Six higher knowledges realized,
The end of suffering drawing near.

(Outro)

You don't need wealth to make an offering,
You only need a heart that's true.
Let every talent serve the good,
And let wisdom shine through you.

Venerable Buddhupatthāka Thera: The Conch-Blower Who Honored the Buddha

Introduction

The Buddhupatthāka Therāpadāna, the tenth account in the Sudhāvagga of the Apadāna, Tipiṭaka Volume 32, tells the story of a devotee who honored Vipassī Buddha by blowing a conch and continually serving the Buddha.

His story illustrates how personal talents can be dedicated to wholesome purposes and how sincere devotion can become a foundation for spiritual development.

1. His Service to Vipassī Buddha

In a previous existence, the future Buddhupatthāka Thera blew a conch in honor of Vipassī Buddha. He also devoted himself to serving and supporting the Buddha.

In his verses, he described the fruits of this service. He recalled that musical instruments numbering sixty thousand surrounded him continually.

He stated that, through his service to the Buddha in the ninety-first aeon before the present one, he never experienced a woeful destination.

He also recounted that, in the ninety-fourth aeon before the present one, there were sixteen Universal Monarchs bearing the name Mahānighosa, endowed with great power.

Finally, he declared that he had realized the Four Analytical Knowledges, the Eight Liberations, and the Six Higher Knowledges, and had completed the Buddha's teaching.

2. His Life According to the Commentary

The commentary provides further details about his life.

During the time of Vipassī Buddha, he was born into a family of conch-blowers. As he grew older, he became skilled in the art of blowing the conch.

He regularly blew the conch in honor of the Buddha, using the sound itself as an offering.

As a result of this wholesome deed, he experienced fortunate existences among celestial beings and human beings and became widely renowned.

In the time of Gotama Buddha, he was born into a family and was known as Madhussara. After developing faith in the Buddha's teaching, he entered the monastic life and attained arahantship not long afterward. He later became known as Madhurassara Thera.

One day, remembering his former deeds, he felt great joy and recited the verses describing his past wholesome actions.

3. The Dhamma Lessons

Offering Through One's Own Talents

The future elder did not need expensive possessions to honor the Buddha. He used his musical skill as an offering. This teaches us that everyone can give something meaningful through their own abilities.

Consistent Devotion

The commentary states that he regularly blew the conch in honor of the Buddha. His example highlights the importance of continuing wholesome actions rather than performing them only on special occasions.

Art as a Means of Goodness

Music and art can inspire faith, harmony, and positive values when they are used with wholesome intentions.

From Faith to Wisdom

The elder's story also reminds us that devotional acts can support spiritual development, but liberation requires the cultivation of wisdom and the practice of the Dhamma.

4. A Message for Modern Society

People do not need great wealth to contribute to society. Musicians can use music to inspire others; artists can create meaningful works; and ordinary people can use their skills to support their communities.

The story of Buddhupatthāka Thera encourages everyone to begin with what they already possess, cultivate sincere faith, and gradually develop that faith into wisdom.

Central Message: Use your talents for goodness. Let faith inspire service, and let the practice of the Dhamma lead the mind toward wisdom and liberation.
