Song: The Heart of Selfless Service Inspired by The Khuddaka Nikāya, Apadāna, Sudhāvagga, Veyyāvaccaka Thera Apadāna

(Verse 1)

In the days of Vipassī Buddha,
A great assembly gathered there.
I served with hands that worked in silence,
With faith and kindness as my prayer.

(Verse 2)

I had no treasure to offer,
No precious gift to lay before.
But I could bow with a heart of reverence,
And serve with love forevermore.

(Pre-Chorus)

You don't need riches to be giving,
You don't need gold to make things right.
A willing hand, a heart that's honest,
Can turn a simple task to light.

(Chorus)

Serve with the heart, give what you can,
Help one another, wherever you stand.
No fame, no fortune, no grand reward,
Just walk the path of the Dhamma's call.

Serve with compassion, work with care,
Give your time and learn to share.
Though no one sees the good you do,
A wholesome heart will shine through.

(Bridge)

Sucintiya, a monarch of great power,
Yet wisdom leads beyond the crown.
Four analytical knowledges,
Eight liberations, six higher insights found.

(Outro)

The greatest gift is not what we possess,
But the kindness that we give.
Serve with faith, let goodness grow,
And make the Dhamma live.

Venerable Veyyāvaccaka Thera: The Merit of Selfless Service to the Buddhist Community

Introduction

The Veyyāvaccaka Therāpadāna, the ninth account in the Sudhāvagga of the Apadāna, recounts the past good deeds of a monk who served as a veyyāvacca, a person responsible for assisting with various duties and services.

His story teaches that generosity is not limited to material offerings. Sincere service, physical effort, and wholehearted devotion can also become wholesome acts.

1. His Past Deed in the Time of Vipassī Buddha

According to the Tipiṭaka, during a great assembly of the Buddha Vipassī, the future Veyyāvaccaka Thera served as an attendant, helping with all necessary tasks.

He wished to offer a material gift to the Buddha, but had nothing suitable to give. Nevertheless, his mind was full of faith and clarity, so he respectfully bowed at the Buddha's feet.

He recalled that this act of service had been performed ninety-one aeons before the present one. As a result of this wholesome deed, he stated that he had never known a woeful destination.

He also recounted that eight aeons before the present one, he had been a Universal Monarch named Sucintiya, possessing the seven treasures and great power.

2. The Dhamma of Selfless Service

Service is a form of giving.

Generosity does not always require money or possessions. Helping others, organizing activities, maintaining a place of worship, and offering one's skills and time are also meaningful forms of giving.

Intention is essential.

Although he had no material gift to offer, the future elder maintained a pure and devoted mind. His story reminds us that the value of giving should not be measured by the price of an offering alone.

Behind-the-scenes work matters.

A person who quietly supports a community makes an important contribution, even without recognition or public praise.

Respect nurtures wholesome qualities.

His respectful bow to the Buddha reflects humility and sincere reverence, qualities that help cultivate a peaceful and generous mind.

3. His Spiritual Attainments

The elder declared that he had realized:

  • The Four Paṭisambhidās, or analytical knowledges.

  • The Eight Vimokkhas, or liberations.

  • The Six Abhiññās, or higher knowledges.

He concluded that he had fulfilled the Buddha's teaching.

4. A Lesson for Modern Society

The story of Venerable Veyyāvaccaka Thera reminds us that a meaningful contribution does not depend on wealth or social status.

People can support their communities through their time, skills, kindness, and willingness to serve. Those who work quietly for the common good deserve respect just as much as those who receive public recognition.

The central message: A sincere heart and selfless service can make even an ordinary task a meaningful act of merit.
