The Madhura Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikaya, presents a profound dialogue between Venerable Mahākaccāna and King Madhura, demonstrating that the caste system and social hierarchy are merely worldly conventions rather than ultimate truths.
The king questioned the traditional belief that Brahmins were inherently superior to other social classes. In response, Venerable Mahākaccāna explained that all human beings are fundamentally equal. Wealth, influence, and social status do not determine one's true worth, as individuals from every social background may possess economic power and exercise authority.
More importantly, the law of kamma (karma) applies equally to everyone. Those who perform unwholesome actions experience suffering, while those who cultivate wholesome deeds attain happiness and fortunate rebirth, regardless of their birth or social class.
The sutta further illustrates equality through the justice system, where criminals are judged according to their actions rather than their lineage, and through the Buddhist monastic order, where individuals from every background leave behind their former social identity upon ordination and are respected equally as members of the Sangha.
Convinced by these clear and rational explanations, King Madhura accepted the Buddha's teaching and declared himself a devoted lay follower.
In today's era of Artificial Intelligence, the Madhura Sutta offers powerful ethical guidance. AI systems increasingly influence decisions involving education, healthcare, employment, finance, law, and public administration. พระมหากัจจานะทรงอธิบายว่า ไม่ว่าบุคคลจะเกิดในชนชั้นใด หากมีทรัพย์สินก็สามารถจ้างวานผู้อื่นได้เช่นเดียวกัน แสดงให้เห็นว่าอำนาจทางเศรษฐกิจมิได้ขึ้นอยู่กับวรรณะ อีกทั้งเมื่อบุคคลกระทำความชั่ว ย่อมได้รับผลแห่งกรรม และเมื่อกระทำความดี ย่อมได้รับผลแห่งกรรมที่ดีโดยเสมอภาค ไม่มีข้อยกเว้นสำหรับผู้ใด
พระสูตรยังยกตัวอย่างกระบวนการยุติธรรมที่ลงโทษผู้กระทำผิดโดยไม่เลือกชาติกำเนิด รวมถึงการอุปสมบทที่ทำให้ผู้บวชละทิ้งฐานะเดิมและได้รับการยอมรับในฐานะสมณะอย่างเท่าเทียม สิ่งเหล่านี้ล้วนยืนยันว่า ความสูงส่งหรือความต่ำต้อยมิได้ติดตัวมาตั้งแต่เกิด แต่เกิดจากการประพฤติปฏิบัติของแต่ละบุคคล
