The Piyajātika Sutta: Letting Go of Attachment as a Path to Global Peace in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Bangkok, July 6, 2026 – As the world faces political polarization, armed conflicts, social anxiety, and the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Buddhist scholars suggest that the Piyajātika Sutta offers timeless wisdom for building sustainable peace through emotional awareness and freedom from attachment.

The sutta begins with the Buddha consoling a grieving father who had lost his beloved son. The Buddha teaches that sorrow, grief, and despair arise because of attachment to what is dear. Although this teaching was initially questioned by those who believed love brings only happiness, Queen Mallikā later explained to King Pasenadi that suffering is not caused by loving itself, but by clinging to what inevitably changes.

This insight remains highly relevant in today's digital society, where people often become attached to wealth, status, political power, online identities, and technological achievements. Such attachment frequently gives rise to fear, anxiety, conflict, and division.

Researchers in AI ethics argue that future technologies should support emotional well-being, empathy, dialogue, and human dignity instead of encouraging addiction, manipulation, misinformation, or social polarization.

The principles of the Piyajātika Sutta also provide valuable guidance for international peacebuilding. By reducing attachment to narrow self-interest and fostering mutual understanding, nations can replace confrontation with dialogue and cooperation.

Experts emphasize that genuine love is strengthened by wisdom rather than possession. When individuals understand the impermanent nature of life, they become more resilient in the face of loss and less likely to respond with hatred or violence.

Far beyond an ancient discourse on grief, the Piyajātika Sutta presents a universal philosophy for cultivating inner peace, responsible innovation, and compassionate leadership. Combined with ethical Artificial Intelligence, these timeless teachings can help humanity build a future founded upon understanding, justice, and lasting global peace.
