When hearts are torn by fear and pride,
Walls grow strong on every side.
Compassion shines a guiding light,
Turning darkness into bright.
[Verse 2]
Truth becomes our faithful guide,
Walking forward side by side.
Sharing kindness, trust, and care,
Building hope for all to share.
[Chorus]
United for lasting peace,
Let all hatred finally cease.
Hand in hand with hearts sincere,
Bringing every nation near.
Justice, wisdom, mercy too,
Guide us in the things we do.
Human hearts and AI stand,
Building peace across the land.
Samagama Sutta Offers a Timeless Blueprint for Conflict Resolution and Sustainable World Peace
The Samagama Sutta (Majjhima Nikāya, Book 14 of the Pāli Canon) presents one of Buddhism's most comprehensive teachings on preventing conflict and preserving unity. Inspired by the divisions that arose among the Nigaṇṭhas after the death of their leader, the Buddha established practical principles for maintaining harmony that remain highly relevant to today's global society.
The Samagama Sutta recounts how serious disputes emerged within the Nigaṇṭha community following the passing of its leader. The Buddha used this event as an important lesson, emphasizing the need to establish strong ethical and organizational foundations to prevent similar divisions within the Buddhist Sangha.
The discourse explains that conflicts originate from unwholesome mental states, disrespect toward the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Sangha, and neglect of the Dhamma-Vinaya. To address these dangers, the Buddha identified six causes of disputes, enabling practitioners to recognize and prevent the roots of conflict before they escalate.
When disagreements arise, the Buddha recommended neither force nor domination. Instead, He established the Seven Methods for Settling Disputes (Adhikaraṇa-samatha) as systematic procedures for resolving conflicts fairly according to the Dhamma and Vinaya, ensuring justice, reconciliation, and communal stability.
The discourse further highlights the Six Principles of Cordiality (Sāraṇīya Dhammas), encouraging kindness in bodily actions, speech, and thought, generous sharing, common ethical conduct, and harmony in right view. These principles cultivate mutual trust, respect, and lasting unity.
Peace scholars observe that these teachings remain remarkably applicable to modern society. Whether addressing conflicts within organizations, governments, or the international community, transparent mediation, ethical dialogue, respect for shared rules, and compassionate cooperation are essential for sustainable peace.
In the era of Artificial Intelligence, the Samagama Sutta also provides valuable ethical guidance. AI systems designed with fairness, transparency, accountability, compassion, and respect for human dignity can help reduce polarization and support peaceful conflict resolution.
Scholars conclude that the Samagama Sutta is not merely a discourse for preserving monastic harmony but a universal framework for conflict management, ethical governance, social cohesion, and sustainable world peace.
