“Anumāna Sutta” Offers a Path to Global Peace in the AI Era: Begin with Self-Reflection and Openness to Constructive Criticism

As the world faces the rapid expansion of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI), scholars in Buddhist studies and peace research have highlighted the Anumāna Sutta from the Majjhima Nikāya as an important framework for promoting global peace and ethical AI development.

The discourse, delivered by Venerable Mahā Moggallāna, emphasizes self-examination and the willingness to accept constructive criticism from others. Its purpose is to cultivate a teachable and humble character. The sutta identifies sixteen unwholesome qualities, including anger, arrogance, self-exaltation, stubbornness, and unwillingness to listen to others. These traits undermine trust, cooperation, and harmonious coexistence.

Peace researchers note that one of the central principles of the Anumāna Sutta is the practice of placing oneself in another person's position. Individuals are encouraged to reflect that behaviors they dislike in others would also be disliked if they themselves displayed those same behaviors. This principle closely aligns with modern approaches to conflict resolution, intercultural understanding, empathy, and peaceful coexistence.

In the context of AI, technology ethicists believe that the Anumāna Sutta provides valuable guidance for developing human-centered artificial intelligence. Its teachings support the design of algorithms that minimize bias, respect human dignity, and promote fairness in automated decision-making systems.

Venerable Mahā Moggallāna compares self-reflection to looking into a mirror. When one notices dirt on the face, one immediately cleans it. If the face is already clean, one feels joy and continues to maintain that cleanliness. Scholars suggest that this metaphor is highly relevant to the digital age, where individuals, organizations, and AI developers must continuously examine their weaknesses, biases, and shortcomings in order to prevent harmful consequences for society.

Experts in AI governance warn that one of the greatest risks of modern technology is the lack of self-criticism and the refusal to accept feedback. Such attitudes can contribute to misinformation, discrimination, and the misuse of AI to deepen social divisions. Conversely, when developers and users are willing to listen, learn, and improve, technology can become a powerful instrument for cooperation, mutual understanding, and peace.

According to scholars, building global peace in the twenty-first century begins not merely with changing others but with transforming oneself. As taught in the Anumāna Sutta, those who courageously acknowledge their faults and strive for self-improvement become agents of trust, harmony, and social stability.

The Anumāna Sutta therefore serves not only as a guide to personal development but also as a framework for fostering a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and the responsible use of AI for the benefit of humanity. Through these principles, a more peaceful and sustainable global future may be achieved.
