“Rathavinita Sutta” Offers a Path to Global Peace in the AI Era: Advancing Technology Through Ethical and Gradual Development

Amid the rapid transformation brought about by artificial intelligence (AI), Buddhist scholars are drawing upon the teachings of the Rathavinita Sutta from the Majjhima Nikaya as a framework for promoting global peace. They emphasize that both human development and technological advancement must proceed in a balanced and progressive manner if lasting peace and stability are to be achieved.

The Rathavinita Sutta records a profound dialogue between Venerable Sariputta, renowned as the Buddha’s chief disciple in wisdom, and Venerable Punna Mantaniputta at Andhavana Grove. Their discussion focuses on the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice: Anupada Parinibbana, the complete cessation of suffering through the absence of attachment and clinging.

Venerable Punna explains that this supreme goal cannot be attained instantly. Rather, it requires a sequence of mutually supportive stages, illustrated through the metaphor of “seven relay chariots.” Just as a traveler reaches a distant destination by transferring from one chariot to another, spiritual progress unfolds through successive stages that lead toward final liberation.

The journey begins with purity of moral conduct, followed by purification of mind, right understanding, insight into reality, and progressively deepening wisdom. Each stage serves not as an end in itself but as a necessary foundation for the next stage of development.

Scholars note that this principle offers valuable guidance for AI development and global peacebuilding. Modern societies often focus on technological outcomes while neglecting the ethical and moral foundations required to ensure that innovation benefits humanity.

In the AI era, peace cannot be achieved through technology alone. It must begin with the cultivation of ethical awareness, responsibility, and wisdom among those who create and use technology. Similar to the seven relay chariots, every stage of development is essential and cannot be skipped.

Experts in AI ethics argue that technological progress should be built upon transparency, accountability, and public trust before advancing toward innovation, economic growth, and solutions to global challenges. This gradual and interconnected process closely mirrors the teachings of the Rathavinita Sutta.

Furthermore, the dialogue between Venerable Sariputta and Venerable Punna reflects the values of humility, mutual respect, and openness to learning from one another. These qualities are increasingly important in today’s digitally connected world, where diverse perspectives and global collaboration are essential.

Scholars conclude that if humanity applies the lessons of the Rathavinita Sutta to AI development—prioritizing human development alongside technological innovation and grounding systems in ethics, wisdom, and cooperation—technology can become a powerful force for peace, social harmony, and sustainable progress.

The Rathavinita Sutta therefore serves as a timeless reminder that true success lies not merely in reaching a destination but in cultivating oneself correctly throughout every stage of the journey. Only then can humanity ensure that the destination of technological progress becomes a destination of genuine peace for all.
