As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the world at an unprecedented pace, Buddhist scholars are revisiting the teachings of the Vammika Sutta from the Majjhima Nikaya as a framework for fostering global peace in the digital age. They emphasize that technological advancement alone cannot bring lasting peace if humanity remains unable to overcome the inner defilements and conflicts of the mind.
The Vammika Sutta presents a profound allegorical dialogue in which a deity poses a series of riddles to Venerable Kumara Kassapa. The Buddha later reveals the deeper meanings behind the symbols contained in the riddles. In this discourse, the “anthill” symbolizes the human body and mind, where countless attachments, mental formations, and defilements accumulate.
The Buddha explains that each object uncovered during the excavation of the anthill represents a psychological obstacle. For example, the “peg” symbolizes ignorance (avijja), the fundamental misunderstanding of reality, while the “toad” represents anger, resentment, and destructive emotions that can erupt at any moment.
These teachings suggest that sustainable peace must begin with inner transformation. Just as one excavates the anthill to uncover hidden obstacles, individuals must use wisdom to identify and remove the mental barriers that obstruct harmony and understanding.
In the context of the AI era, experts argue that although artificial intelligence possesses tremendous potential to address global challenges, it may also become a source of conflict, inequality, or misinformation if its creators and users remain driven by greed, hatred, and delusion.
The Vammika Sutta therefore highlights the importance of cultivating mindfulness and wisdom while reducing mental hindrances and attachment to the five aggregates. Such inner development can guide both human behavior and technological innovation toward constructive and beneficial outcomes.
The ultimate discovery within the allegorical excavation is the “Naga,” which the Buddha identifies as a symbol of the Arahant—the fully enlightened being who has eradicated all defilements. This symbolizes the attainment of genuine inner peace and liberation.
Scholars suggest that if humanity applies these principles to AI development, placing ethics, wisdom, and compassion alongside innovation, technology can become more than a tool of progress. It can serve as a powerful force for peace, cooperation, and global stability.
The Vammika Sutta is therefore not merely a spiritual teaching on liberation. It is also a timeless lesson reminding humanity to “excavate the self” before shaping the future through powerful technologies. By doing so, artificial intelligence can be developed and utilized for the genuine benefit of humankind and the promotion of lasting world peace.
