Verañjaka Sutta: Moral Conduct and Responsibility as a Foundation for Peace in the AI Era

Amid the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI), scholars of Buddhism and technology ethics are increasingly turning to the teachings of the Verañjaka Sutta as an important framework for promoting peace and ethical governance in the twenty-first century.

The Verañjaka Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikāya of the Sutta Piṭaka, presents the Buddha's teaching on the causes leading beings toward fortunate or unfortunate destinies. The Buddha emphasized that bodily actions, speech, and thoughts are the primary factors determining both present and future outcomes.

He explained the Ten Wholesome Courses of Action as the path leading to happiness, prosperity, and heavenly rebirth. These include refraining from harming others, speaking truthfully, cultivating goodwill, and maintaining right view. Conversely, the Ten Unwholesome Courses of Action, rooted in greed, hatred, and delusion, lead to decline, conflict, and unfortunate realms.

Experts in AI ethics note that these teachings are highly relevant to the challenges of today's digital world. AI systems are ultimately shaped by human intentions and decisions. Without moral responsibility, technology can become a tool for misinformation, privacy violations, discrimination, and social division.

On the other hand, if developers, policymakers, and users embrace the principles of the Ten Wholesome Courses of Action, AI can be directed toward fairness, transparency, international cooperation, and the improvement of human well-being.

Scholars further observe that the central message of the Verañjaka Sutta—that every action produces consequences—closely aligns with the concept of Responsible AI, which emphasizes consideration of the long-term effects of technology on humanity, society, and the environment.

The discourse also teaches that virtuous conduct not only supports worldly success but serves as the foundation for the highest spiritual attainment: liberation and Nibbāna.

For the AI era, the Verañjaka Sutta reminds humanity that lasting peace does not begin with machines or algorithms. Rather, it begins with mindful restraint and responsibility in body, speech, and mind among those who create and use technology.
