Scholars of Buddhism point out that the teachings of the Kosambiya Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka, offer valuable guidance for fostering peace in the AI era.
The sutta recounts an incident in which the Buddha intervened in a dispute among monks in Kosambi. Their disagreement, rooted in attachment to personal opinions and arguments, eventually caused serious division within the community. The Buddha explained that harming one another through speech and refusing to listen to others inevitably leads to prolonged suffering and social discord.
To address this problem, the Buddha taught the Six Principles of Cordiality (Saraniya Dhamma), which cultivate mutual love, respect, and harmony. These principles include kindness in bodily actions, speech, and thoughts; sharing resources fairly; maintaining common ethical conduct; and upholding right views together.
Experts suggest that applying these six principles to AI systems and online communities could help promote respectful communication, reduce harmful speech and misinformation, and encourage the sharing of knowledge for the common good.
The Kosambiya Sutta also presents the Seven Noble Insights (Ariya Ñāṇa), profound wisdom that enables individuals to overcome greed, attachment, and delusion—the root causes of conflict.
In the context of AI, these noble insights can serve as a model for developing human wisdom, encouraging people to use technology mindfully, evaluate information critically, distinguish truth from falsehood, and make decisions based on collective well-being rather than personal gain.
According to scholars, the significance of the Kosambiya Sutta extends far beyond resolving disputes among monks. It provides a timeless framework for conflict resolution through compassion, wisdom, and mutual understanding, forming the foundation of sustainable peace.
As AI continues to advance rapidly, the teachings of the Kosambiya Sutta remain highly relevant. They remind humanity that even the most sophisticated technology cannot create lasting peace without compassion, harmony, and wisdom.
