The Teaching of the Mitta Sutta: True Friends on Life’s Journey
The Mitta Sutta, the third discourse on friendship in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, teaches that different forms of friendship support human beings in different circumstances of life.
A deity asked the Buddha:
“What is a friend for a traveler?
What is a friend in one’s own home?
What is a friend for one who has duties and affairs to attend to?
And what is the friend that follows a person into the next existence?”
The Buddha replied:
“Carts and oxen are friends to the traveler.
A mother is a friend in one’s own home.
Companions are friends to one who has frequent duties and affairs.
And the merit one has personally made is the friend that follows one into the next existence.”
The teaching presents friendship in a profound way. A friend is not merely someone who stays beside us. A friend can also be a source of support, protection, assistance, and encouragement that helps us move forward in life.
For a traveler, carts and oxen provide transportation and strength. They represent the support and resources needed to reach one’s destination.
Within the home, the mother represents love, compassion, care, and self-sacrifice. The home therefore becomes more than a place to live; it becomes a place where people support and nurture one another.
For a person who frequently faces duties and difficulties, companions are important. Good friends provide assistance, advice, encouragement, and cooperation. True friendship is therefore based not merely on personal benefit, but on sincerity and mutual support.
Most importantly, the Buddha teaches that the merit one has personally made becomes a friend that follows one into the next existence. Wealth, status, possessions, and worldly recognition cannot accompany a person forever. But according to Buddhist teaching, wholesome actions and merit have lasting significance.
Applied to modern society, the Mitta Sutta offers a powerful foundation for building friendship, compassion, cooperation, and peace. Peace begins with caring for our families, cultivating sincere friendships, helping those in difficulty, and creating goodness through our own actions.
At the level of society and the world, this teaching encourages people and nations to replace hostility with cooperation, competition with mutual support, and conflict with understanding.
The message of the Mitta Sutta is therefore simple yet profound:
We need different friends throughout the journey of life, but the greatest friend is the goodness we create through our own actions. Goodness never abandons us, and it can become a foundation for peace within ourselves, our communities, and the world.

ในพระสูตร เทวดาได้ทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า อะไรเป็นมิตรของคนเดินทาง อะไรเป็นมิตรในเรือนของตน อะไรเป็นมิตรของคนที่มีธุระเกิดขึ้น และอะไรเป็นมิตรที่ติดตามไปถึงภพหน้า
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า พวกเกวียนและโคเป็นมิตรของคนเดินทาง มารดาเป็นมิตรในเรือนของตน สหายเป็นมิตรของผู้มีธุระเกิดขึ้นเนือง ๆ และบุญที่ตนทำเองเป็นมิตรที่ติดตามไปถึงภพหน้า
หลักธรรมดังกล่าวชี้ให้เห็นว่า “มิตร” มิได้หมายถึงเพียงบุคคลที่อยู่เคียงข้างเราเท่านั้น แต่หมายถึงสิ่งเกื้อกูลที่ทำให้ชีวิตสามารถเดินทางไปข้างหน้าได้อย่างมั่นคง
สำหรับ คนเดินทาง เกวียนและโคเปรียบเสมือนพาหนะและกำลังสนับสนุนที่ช่วยให้เดินทางถึงจุดหมาย สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของการมีเครื่องมือและผู้สนับสนุนที่เหมาะสมในการดำเนินชีวิต
ส่วน มิตรในเรือน คือ “มารดา” ซึ่งสะท้อนถึงความรัก ความเมตตา ความเสียสละ และความผูกพันภายในครอบครัว บ้านจึงมิใช่เพียงสถานที่พักอาศัย แต่เป็นพื้นที่แห่งการดูแลและเกื้อกูลซึ่งกันและกัน
ขณะที่ ผู้มีธุระเกิดขึ้นเนือง ๆ ย่อมต้องอาศัย “สหาย” หรือเพื่อนผู้คอยช่วยเหลือ ให้คำปรึกษา และร่วมแก้ไขปัญหา หลักธรรมข้อนี้จึงสะท้อนคุณค่าของมิตรภาพที่ตั้งอยู่บนความจริงใจและการช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูล มิใช่ความสัมพันธ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเพียงเพื่อผลประโยชน์
ที่สำคัญที่สุดคือ “บุญที่ตนทำเองเป็นมิตรติดตามไปถึงภพหน้า” เป็นคำสอนที่ชี้ให้มนุษย์ตระหนักว่า ทรัพย์สิน ชื่อเสียง หรือตำแหน่งอาจไม่สามารถติดตามเราไปได้ แต่การกระทำความดีที่ได้สั่งสมไว้ย่อมเป็นสิ่งที่มีคุณค่าตามหลักพระพุทธศาสนา
เมื่อประยุกต์ใช้กับสังคมปัจจุบัน มิตตสูตรสามารถนำมาเป็นหลักในการสร้าง สังคมแห่งมิตรภาพและสันติภาพ โดยเริ่มจากการดูแลครอบครัว สร้างเพื่อนที่ดี ช่วยเหลือผู้ที่กำลังประสบปัญหา และร่วมกันสร้างความดีให้เกิดขึ้นในสังคม
ในระดับประเทศ หลักธรรมดังกล่าวสามารถนำไปสู่การสร้างวัฒนธรรมแห่งการพึ่งพาอาศัยกัน ลดการแข่งขันที่นำไปสู่ความขัดแย้ง และส่งเสริมความร่วมมือระหว่างประชาชน ชุมชน และประเทศต่าง ๆ เพราะสันติภาพมิได้เกิดจากการไม่มีศัตรูเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่เกิดจากการที่มนุษย์มองเห็นคุณค่าของการเป็น “มิตร” ต่อกัน
มิตตสูตรจึงฝากข้อคิดสำคัญว่า ชีวิตต้องมีมิตรที่เหมาะสมในแต่ละช่วงเวลา แต่เหนือกว่ามิตรทั้งหลายคือความดีที่เราลงมือทำด้วยตนเอง เพราะความดีคือมิตรที่ไม่ทอดทิ้งเรา และเป็นรากฐานของสันติภาพทั้งภายในใจและในสังคม
