The Teaching of the Kavi Sutta
The Kavi Sutta, the tenth discourse in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, presents a profound reflection on the origins and foundations of verses, poetry, language, and the poet who gives expression to thought through words.
A deity asked the Buddha:
“What is the origin of verses?
What makes their expressions manifest?
Upon what do verses depend?
And what is the foundation of verses?”
The Buddha replied:
“Meter is the origin of verses.
Syllables are what make their expressions manifest.
Verses depend upon names,
and the poet is the foundation of verses.”
The teaching shows that poetry does not arise without structure. It consists of several interconnected elements. Meter provides rhythm and form, while syllables give visible and audible expression to language.
Names allow words to convey meaning and become recognized within a shared linguistic world. The poet becomes the foundation through which thoughts, feelings, imagination, and wisdom are transformed into meaningful words.
Viewed from the perspective of modern communication, the Kavi Sutta reminds us that language is not merely a tool for transmitting information; it is a powerful force capable of shaping people and society.
One word can give encouragement, while another can create conflict. Therefore, everyone who uses language—journalists, writers, poets, teachers, politicians, and people communicating through social media—carries responsibility for the words they share.
In the age of social media, where information can spread rapidly across the world, the teaching can be applied as a principle of mindful and wise communication. Before sharing a message, we should consider its accuracy, appropriateness, and possible impact on others.
When society is divided by different opinions, respectful and thoughtful language can reduce conflict. In contrast, words filled with hatred, contempt, misinformation, or hostility can become fuel for further division.
From the perspective of peacebuilding, the Kavi Sutta can therefore be understood as teaching that poets and communicators have the power to shape the world through words.
When language is used to create understanding, connect people, and express compassion, words can become bridges of peace.
But when language is used to spread hatred, division, or harm, those same words can become instruments of conflict.
The Kavi Sutta therefore offers more than a teaching about poetry and verses. It reminds humanity of the value and responsibility of language. Every word we create can influence thoughts, emotions, and actions.
In an age when a single sentence can travel farther than its speaker ever imagined, the teaching invites us to ask:
“Are our words building walls, or are they building bridges?”
If humanity chooses understanding over hatred, wisdom over prejudice, and connection over division, poetry and communication can become powerful instruments for creating peace through words—from the heart to society, and from society to the world.
“กวิสูตร” เปิดหลักกำเนิดคาถา ชี้ “ฉันท์” เป็นต้นเหตุ “อักขระ” ทำให้ถ้อยคำปรากฏ “กวี” คือที่อาศัยแห่งบทประพันธ์ สะท้อนพลังภาษาเปลี่ยนโลก
หลักธรรมใน กวิสูตรที่ ๑๐ พระไตรปิฎกเล่มที่ ๑๕ พระสุตตันตปิฎก เล่ม ๗ สังยุตตนิกาย สคาถวรรค นำเสนอหลักคิดเกี่ยวกับ “คาถา” หรือถ้อยคำที่ร้อยกรองเป็นบทประพันธ์ โดยสะท้อนให้เห็นความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างฉันทลักษณ์ อักขระ เนื้อหา และผู้สร้างสรรค์ถ้อยคำ ซึ่งสามารถนำมาประยุกต์กับการสื่อสารและการสร้างสันติภาพในสังคมได้อย่างลึกซึ้ง
ในพระสูตร เทวดาทูลถามพระผู้มีพระภาคว่า อะไรเป็นต้นเหตุของคาถา อะไรเป็นเครื่องปรากฏหรือพยัญชนะของคาถา คาถาอาศัยอะไร และอะไรเป็นที่อาศัยของคาถา
พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบว่า “ฉันท์เป็นต้นเหตุของคาถา อักขระเป็นเครื่องปรากฏของคาถา คาถาอาศัยซึ่งชื่อ และกวีเป็นที่อาศัยของคาถา”
หลักธรรมดังกล่าวแสดงให้เห็นว่า บทกวีหรือคาถาไม่ได้เกิดขึ้นอย่างไร้โครงสร้าง แต่ประกอบขึ้นจากองค์ประกอบหลายประการ โดย “ฉันท์” ทำหน้าที่เป็นรากฐานด้านจังหวะและรูปแบบ ขณะที่ “อักขระ” ทำให้ถ้อยคำสามารถปรากฏออกมาเป็นรูปภาษาอย่างชัดเจน
ส่วน “ชื่อ” เป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้ถ้อยคำสามารถสื่อความหมายและถูกเรียกขานหรือรับรู้ร่วมกันในทางภาษา ขณะที่ “กวี” เป็นผู้สร้างสรรค์และเป็นที่อาศัยของคาถา ทำให้ความคิด ความรู้สึก และปัญญาภายในสามารถถ่ายทอดออกมาเป็นถ้อยคำที่มีความหมาย
เมื่อพิจารณาในมุมการสื่อสารยุคปัจจุบัน หลักธรรมจากกวิสูตรสะท้อนว่า ภาษาไม่ใช่เพียงเครื่องมือส่งข้อมูล แต่เป็นพลังที่สามารถสร้างความเข้าใจและเปลี่ยนแปลงสังคมได้
คำพูดหนึ่งคำอาจสร้างกำลังใจ ขณะที่คำพูดอีกคำอาจสร้างความขัดแย้ง ดังนั้น ผู้ใช้ภาษา ไม่ว่าจะเป็นนักข่าว นักเขียน กวี นักการเมือง ครู หรือผู้สื่อสารบนโลกออนไลน์ ล้วนมีความรับผิดชอบต่อถ้อยคำที่ตนเองเผยแพร่
ในยุคสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ที่ข้อมูลสามารถแพร่กระจายได้อย่างรวดเร็ว หลักของกวิสูตรจึงสามารถนำมาประยุกต์เป็นหลัก “สื่อสารด้วยสติและปัญญา” ก่อนเผยแพร่ข้อความควรพิจารณาความถูกต้อง ความเหมาะสม และผลกระทบที่จะเกิดขึ้นกับผู้อื่น
โดยเฉพาะในสถานการณ์ที่สังคมมีความเห็นแตกต่างกัน การใช้ถ้อยคำที่สุภาพ มีเหตุผล และเคารพศักดิ์ศรีของผู้อื่น สามารถช่วยลดความขัดแย้งได้ ขณะที่ถ้อยคำที่เต็มไปด้วยความเกลียดชัง การดูหมิ่น หรือการบิดเบือนข้อมูล อาจกลายเป็นเชื้อไฟที่ขยายความขัดแย้งให้รุนแรงขึ้น
ในมิติของ สันติภาพ กวิสูตรจึงสามารถตีความเป็นหลักคิดว่า “กวีและผู้สื่อสารมีพลังในการสร้างโลกด้วยถ้อยคำ” หากใช้ภาษาเพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจ เชื่อมโยงผู้คน และส่งต่อความเมตตา ถ้อยคำนั้นก็สามารถเป็นสะพานแห่งสันติภาพ
แต่หากใช้ภาษาเพื่อสร้างความเกลียดชัง แบ่งแยก หรือทำร้ายผู้อื่น ภาษาเดียวกันนั้นก็อาจกลายเป็นเครื่องมือของความขัดแย้ง
ดังนั้น หลักธรรมจากกวิสูตรจึงมิได้กล่าวถึงเพียงโครงสร้างของคาถาหรือบทกวีเท่านั้น แต่ยังชวนให้มนุษย์ตระหนักถึง คุณค่าและความรับผิดชอบของการใช้ภาษา เพราะทุกถ้อยคำที่ถูกสร้างขึ้นย่อมมีพลังในการส่งผลต่อความคิด ความรู้สึก และการกระทำของผู้คน
ในยุคที่ “คำพูด” สามารถเดินทางไปได้ไกลกว่าที่ผู้พูดคาดคิด หลักกวิสูตรจึงเป็นข้อเตือนใจว่า ก่อนจะเปล่งวาจาหรือเผยแพร่ข้อความ ควรถามตนเองว่า ถ้อยคำของเรากำลังสร้างกำแพง หรือกำลังสร้างสะพาน
และหากทุกคนเลือกใช้ภาษาเพื่อสร้างความเข้าใจมากกว่าความเกลียดชัง ใช้ปัญญามากกว่าอคติ และใช้ถ้อยคำเพื่อเชื่อมโยงหัวใจมากกว่าการแบ่งแยก กวีนิพนธ์และการสื่อสารก็สามารถกลายเป็นพลังสำคัญในการสร้าง สันติภาพจากถ้อยคำ สู่สังคม และสู่โลก ได้
