“Cetokhila Sutta” Offers a Path to Global Peace in the AI Era: Removing the Nails that Pin the Mind and Breaking the Bonds that Restrain Human Potential

Amid the rapid transformation of the digital world and the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), scholars of Buddhism, technology ethics, and peace studies have highlighted the Cetokhila Sutta from the Majjhima Nikāya as a valuable framework for promoting global peace and guiding the ethical development of AI.

The central teaching of the sutta concerns the “Five Mental Nails” and the “Five Mental Bonds,” which act as major obstacles to human intellectual and spiritual growth. The Buddha explained that doubt, mistrust, resentment, and attachment to worldly pleasures function like nails driven into the mind, preventing individuals from attaining inner freedom and wisdom.

Scholars note that these teachings strongly resonate with contemporary global challenges. Modern societies face increasing polarization, misinformation, distrust, and technological competition among nations. These conditions can be understood as modern forms of the “mental nails” that hinder cooperation and collective problem-solving on a global scale.

In the context of AI, technology ethicists argue that attachment to economic gain, the pursuit of geopolitical advantage, and irresponsible technological competition may become “mental bonds” that divert AI development away from serving humanity’s common good. Such tendencies could increase risks related to security, inequality, and international conflict.

The sutta also presents the image of a chick hatching safely from its shell when nurtured according to natural conditions. Scholars interpret this metaphor as highly relevant to AI governance. Just as a chick requires proper development, AI systems require careful oversight, ethical standards, and collaborative stewardship to ensure that technological progress remains safe, beneficial, and aligned with human values.

Experts in peace studies further suggest that the Four Bases of Success (Iddhipāda)—aspiration, effort, concentration, and investigation—can provide a practical framework for AI development aimed at peacebuilding. These principles encourage positive motivation, persistent effort, focused commitment to the common good, and continuous evaluation of technological impacts.

The teachings of the Cetokhila Sutta also emphasize that external progress alone is insufficient if individuals remain trapped by fear, anger, attachment, and delusion. Sustainable peace therefore requires both inner transformation and responsible technological innovation. Human development and technological development must advance together.

According to scholars, building peace in the twenty-first century is not merely about creating more powerful AI systems. It is equally about cultivating wiser and more ethical human beings. When humanity succeeds in removing the “mental nails” and breaking the “mental bonds” that limit understanding and cooperation, artificial intelligence can become a force for mutual respect, collaboration, and lasting global peace.

The Cetokhila Sutta thus offers a timeless lesson for the modern world: true peace does not arise from technological advancement alone. It emerges when human beings free their minds from prejudice and destructive impulses, and use wisdom and ethical principles to guide the future of the digital age in a balanced and sustainable way.
