“Dvedhāvitakka Sutta” Offers a Path to Global Peace in the AI Era: Transforming Human Thought into Wisdom and Cooperation

As artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies continue to transform societies across the globe, scholars of Buddhism and technology have highlighted the relevance of the Dvedhāvitakka Sutta as a valuable framework for promoting global peace in the age of AI.

The Dvedhāvitakka Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikāya of the Sutta Piṭaka, records the Buddha’s contemplation before His Enlightenment. In this discourse, He classified thoughts into two categories: unwholesome thoughts, which lead to harm, conflict, and suffering, and wholesome thoughts, which lead to compassion, tranquility, and wisdom.

The Buddha discovered an important psychological principle: the human mind naturally inclines toward whatever it repeatedly contemplates. When negative thoughts dominate the mind, they eventually influence speech, actions, and behavior. Conversely, when wholesome and constructive thoughts are cultivated, the mind develops serenity, concentration, and wisdom capable of dispelling ignorance.

Experts note that this teaching is highly relevant to the challenges of the AI era. Today, algorithms and intelligent systems can rapidly amplify both positive and negative information. If anger, hatred, prejudice, or misinformation are allowed to spread through technology, social and global conflicts may intensify significantly.

On the other hand, when AI is guided by mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion, it can become a powerful tool for education, intercultural communication, collaborative problem-solving, and the promotion of mutual understanding among people worldwide.

Another key teaching in the Dvedhāvitakka Sutta is the comparison of the “safe path” with the Noble Eightfold Path, which leads individuals away from defilements, delusion, and destructive influences. Scholars suggest that this principle can serve as an ethical framework for AI development, emphasizing transparency, accountability, public benefit, and respect for human dignity.

Experts conclude that global peace in the AI era does not begin with machines or intelligent systems. Rather, it begins with the quality of human thought. When individuals learn to restrain unwholesome thinking, cultivate wholesome intentions, and live with mindfulness and diligent effort, AI can become a powerful force for peace, justice, and sustainable development for present and future generations.
