[Verse 1]
Create no enemy in this world,
Let anger and hatred be unfurled.
Walk on the path of virtue and peace,
Let compassion bring suffering to cease.
[Verse 2]
Stand firm in the holy way,
Do not let goodness fade away.
When desire rises within the heart,
See it clearly, then let it depart.
[Chorus]
The one who creates no enemy
Becomes a messenger of peace.
The one who lives by virtue
Finds inner freedom and release.
Do not judge a person by birth,
Do not measure value by gold.
A heart established in Dharma
Is worthy of respect untold.
[Verse 3]
Even kings may bow their heads
Before the one whose virtue leads.
For true worth does not come from birth,
But from the goodness one brings to Earth.
[Chorus]
The one who creates no enemy
Becomes a messenger of peace.
The one who lives by virtue
Finds inner freedom and release.
Know desire, release attachment,
Let compassion guide the way.
When hatred disappears from the heart,
A brighter world begins today.
[Bridge]
No birth can make the heart supreme,
No wealth can fulfill the deepest dream.
Virtue, wisdom, compassion, and peace
Are the treasures that bring true release.
[Final Chorus]
Be the one who creates no enemy,
Be the one who walks in peace.
Hold firmly to the path of virtue,
Let hatred and craving cease.
May every heart become free,
May every person live with dignity.
When we honor virtue above all,
Peace can rise and unite us all.
The Araṇa Sutta: The Monk Who Is No Enemy to the World
Araṇa Sutta, Discourse No. 11
The Sutta Piṭaka, Saṃyutta Nikāya, Sagāthāvagga
The deity asked the Blessed One:
“Who are those who are not enemies in this world?
Whose holy life, once completed, does not decline?
Who understands and knows desire in this world?
Who possesses freedom at all times?
Whom do mothers, fathers, or brothers honor?
Who is the person firmly established in virtue?
And whom do even kings pay homage to,
though that person may be of low birth,
within this teaching and discipline?”
The Blessed One answered:
“The monks in this teaching and discipline are not enemies in the world.
The holy life completed by monks does not decline.
Monks understand and know desire.
Freedom belongs to the monks at all times.
Mothers, fathers, and brothers honor the person
who is firmly established in virtue—the monk.
Even kings pay homage to a monk
within this teaching and discipline,
even if he is of low birth.”
The Araṇa Sutta presents a profound teaching on non-enmity, spiritual discipline, understanding desire, inner freedom, and the value of virtue beyond social status.
The statement that monks are “not enemies in the world” emphasizes a life based on non-harming and the abandonment of hostility. A person who cultivates virtue does not seek to create hatred or revenge but instead works toward peace and understanding.
The teaching that the completed holy life does not decline points to the importance of steadfast practice. Spiritual development requires consistency, discipline, and commitment to the path of virtue.
The Buddha also emphasizes knowing and understanding desire. Desire can bind the mind to attachment and dissatisfaction. By recognizing desire clearly, a person can gradually become less controlled by it and develop greater inner freedom.
The teaching on freedom is therefore not merely political or external freedom. It can also be understood as freedom of the mind—the freedom that arises when a person is no longer dominated by craving, anger, and delusion.
Another important aspect of the sutta is its emphasis on virtue rather than birth or social status. A person of low birth who is firmly established in ethical conduct and the Dhamma is worthy of respect, even from kings.
The Araṇa Sutta therefore offers a powerful social principle: a person's true worth should be measured by conduct, virtue, and wisdom rather than by birth or worldly status.
Its message remains relevant today:
Do not create enemies.
Remain steadfast in the path of virtue.
Understand desire.
Cultivate inner freedom.
Honor goodness above social status.
Through these principles, individuals and societies can move toward greater equality, dignity, compassion, and peace.
