[Verse 1]
A child is the hope of tomorrow,
A light that will brighten the way.
With wisdom and love we can guide them,
To build a better world someday.
Within every home there is friendship,
A partner who walks by our side.
Through sorrow and joy, through the changes of life,
With love we can journey with pride.
[Pre-Chorus]
A family with love can heal a heart,
A caring hand can make a brand-new start.
When we learn to understand and forgive,
We create a peaceful way to live.
[Chorus]
Build the foundation, build it with love,
Let peace begin at home.
Walk hand in hand, never alone,
Together we can make the whole world our home.
Children are hope, companions are light,
Rain gives the earth the strength for life.
Care for each other, care for the earth,
Let peace and compassion give new life birth.
[Verse 2]
The rain falls gently upon the earth,
Giving the rivers and fields their life.
The trees, the animals, and humankind
All share this world beneath the sky.
We cannot live apart from nature,
Our lives are connected as one.
If we protect the earth that sustains us,
A peaceful future can come.
[Bridge]
From one home to a community,
From one heart to humanity,
Let kindness cross every border,
Let compassion replace hostility.
No more hatred, no more division,
No more walls between you and me.
With love for people and care for nature,
Let the whole world live peacefully.
[Final Chorus]
Build the foundation, build it with love,
Let peace begin at home.
Walk hand in hand, never alone,
Together we can make the whole world our home.
Children are hope, companions are light,
Rain gives the earth the strength for life.
Care for each other, care for the earth,
Let peace and compassion give new life birth.
[Outro]
From the family to the world,
Let the message of peace unfold.
From every heart, let kindness grow,
And let compassion everywhere flow.
One family, one earth, one human heart,
May peace unite us and never depart.
The Teaching of the Vathu Sutta
The Vathu Sutta, the fourth discourse in this section of the Saṃyutta Nikāya, presents a reflection on the foundations of human life, companionship, and the natural conditions that sustain living beings.
A deity asked the Buddha:
“What is the foundation of human beings?
What is the greatest companion in this world?
And upon what do living beings who dwell upon the earth sustain their lives?”
The Buddha replied:
“Children are the foundation of human beings.
A wife is the greatest companion.
Living beings who dwell upon the earth sustain themselves through rain.”
This teaching can be understood through three interconnected dimensions: family, relationships, and nature.
First, “children are the foundation of human beings.” This may be understood as a reminder that future generations are the foundation and hope of society. Children are not only members of a family; they are also the people who will inherit the responsibility of caring for society and the world. Raising children with wisdom, compassion, and moral values is therefore an investment in the future.
Second, “a wife is the greatest companion.” This highlights the importance of a life partner who shares both happiness and hardship. A relationship based on understanding, compassion, faithfulness, forgiveness, and mutual support can make the family a place of emotional security and a foundation for a peaceful society.
Third, “living beings sustain themselves through rain.” This points to the close relationship between life and nature. Rain supports agriculture, water resources, ecosystems, animals, and human beings. It reminds us that humanity cannot exist separately from the natural world.
In the modern world, this teaching can be connected to the idea that peace begins with healthy relationships within the family and expands into respectful coexistence with nature.
When families are harmonious, partners support one another, children are raised with good values, and people recognize their responsibility toward the environment, these become important foundations for reducing conflict and creating a sustainable society.
The Vathu Sutta therefore offers more than a teaching about family. It invites us to recognize the deep connection between human beings and one another, and between humanity and nature.
Its message for peace can be expressed simply:
Build the family as a foundation,
make companionship a source of strength,
raise future generations with wisdom and compassion,
and protect nature so that life may flourish.
When peace begins within each home, it can gradually spread from the family to the community, from the community to society, and ultimately from society to the wider world.
