Song: Beyond Craving, Toward Peace Inspired by The Taṇhā Sutta

[Verse 1]
Craving pulls the heart along,
Leading life through endless dreams.
Wanting more and wanting to be,
We may lose the peace we seek.

Craving drives the world onward,
Pushing hearts to chase desire.
The more we grasp, the more we suffer,
Caught within the flames of fire.

[Chorus]
See the craving, let it go,
Let wisdom guide the heart.
No more fighting, no more greed,
Let compassion be the start.

See the craving, know the mind,
Do not let desire lead.
Less attachment, less conflict,
More compassion, peace, and freedom.

[Verse 2]
Wanting power, wanting control,
Wanting victory over all,
When desire becomes our master,
Conflict rises, peace may fall.

But if we pause and watch the mind,
Before we choose and act,
Mindfulness and wisdom guide us,
Bringing harmony back.

[Chorus]
See the craving, let it go,
Let wisdom guide the heart.
No more fighting, no more greed,
Let compassion be the start.

See the craving, know the mind,
Do not let desire lead.
Less attachment, less conflict,
More compassion, peace, and freedom.

[Bridge]
The world can change
When hearts can change.
Hatred fades
When love takes its place.

Choose to share,
Choose not to conquer.
Peace begins
Within the human heart.

[Final Chorus]
Craving drives the world
When wisdom is not there.
But mindfulness can light the way,
With compassion everywhere.

Let go of greed,
Let go of fear.
Build a world where hearts unite.
Beyond craving, beyond conflict—

Let humanity walk toward peace.

English Translation

The Taṇhā Sutta: “Craving Drives the World”

The Taṇhā Sutta, found in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, presents a concise but profound teaching about taṇhā, or craving, and its influence on human life and the world.

A celestial being asked the Buddha:

“What leads the world? What drives the world onward? Under the power of what single principle does the whole world proceed?”

The Buddha replied:

“The world is led by craving.
The world is driven by craving.
The whole world proceeds under the power of craving.”

This teaching points to the powerful influence of desire and craving on human thoughts, decisions, and actions. When desire arises, people naturally seek what they want. But when craving grows without mindfulness and wisdom, it can become a force that produces suffering and conflict.

On an individual level, craving may appear as the desire to possess, to become, to achieve, or to make things happen according to one's wishes. When reality does not conform to those desires, disappointment, anger, jealousy, and attachment may arise.

At the social and global level, uncontrolled craving can develop into competition for power, resources, wealth, influence, and advantage. Such competition can become a source of conflict among individuals, communities, and nations.

The teaching of the Taṇhā Sutta, however, should not be understood as a rejection of all aspiration or development. Rather, it encourages human beings to understand and become mindful of craving, instead of allowing craving to control their lives.

When people can observe desire with mindfulness and wisdom, they can distinguish between genuine needs, ordinary aspirations, and destructive attachment. This awareness creates the possibility of making wiser and more compassionate choices.

Applied to peacebuilding, the teaching suggests that reducing the desire to dominate or defeat others can reduce the roots of conflict. Letting go of excessive attachment to personal interests while cultivating generosity, compassion, and cooperation can create space for peace.

The Taṇhā Sutta therefore offers a timeless message: much of the external world is shaped by human desires. If humanity wishes to transform the world, transformation must begin by understanding and wisely guiding the desires within the human heart.

When craving is understood, the mind is no longer its slave. And when people are no longer dominated by craving, society gains a greater possibility of moving from competition and conflict toward cooperation and peace.
