พระผู้มีพระภาคตรัสตอบโดยสรุปว่า “ชื่อย่อมครอบงำสิ่งทั้งปวง สิ่งทั้งปวงที่ยิ่งขึ้นไปกว่าชื่อไม่มี สิ่งทั้งปวงเป็นไปตามอำนาจของธรรมอันหนึ่งคือชื่อ”

หลักธรรมดังกล่าวสามารถนำมาพิจารณาในมิติของการดำเนินชีวิตว่า มนุษย์มิได้สัมพันธ์กับโลกผ่านสิ่งต่าง ๆ เพียงโดยตรง แต่ยังสัมพันธ์ผ่าน ชื่อ ภาษา ความหมาย และการกำหนดเรียก สิ่งต่าง ๆ อีกด้วย

เมื่อสิ่งหนึ่งถูกเรียกว่า “ความสำเร็จ” มนุษย์ก็อาจเกิดความต้องการที่จะครอบครองสิ่งนั้น เมื่อสิ่งหนึ่งถูกเรียกว่า “ความล้มเหลว” ก็อาจเกิดความรู้สึกด้อยค่า ทั้งที่ความจริงของเหตุการณ์อาจมีรายละเอียดมากกว่าชื่อที่ใช้เรียก

ในสังคมยุคดิจิทัล พลังของ “ชื่อ” ยิ่งปรากฏชัด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นคำพาดหัวข่าว คำโฆษณา คำกล่าวทางการเมือง ป้ายกำกับในสื่อสังคมออนไลน์ หรือคำจำกัดความของบุคคลและเหตุการณ์ เพราะเพียงคำหนึ่งคำก็สามารถสร้างความเข้าใจ ความนิยม ความกลัว หรือความขัดแย้งได้

The Nama Sutta: The Power of Names

The Nama Sutta, found in the Samyutta Nikaya, Sagatha Vagga, presents a brief but profound teaching concerning the power of “name” or “designation” in human experience.

A deity asked the Buddha:

“What encompasses all things? What is there beyond which nothing greater exists? What is the one principle by whose power all things proceed?”

The Buddha replied:

“Name encompasses all things. There is nothing beyond name. All things proceed according to the power of one principle: name.”

This teaching can be understood as pointing to the powerful role of language, names, concepts, and designations in shaping human experience.

Human beings do not encounter the world only through direct experience. We also interpret the world through words and concepts. Once something is given a particular name, people may begin to associate it with a particular meaning, value, emotion, or judgment.

For example, when something is called “success,” people may desire it. When something is labeled “failure,” people may feel ashamed or discouraged. Yet reality is often more complex than the label itself.

In the modern digital age, the power of names and words has become even more significant. Headlines, political language, advertising, social-media labels, and public descriptions can influence how people understand individuals and events.

Therefore, the teaching of the Nama Sutta can encourage us not simply to reject names, but to understand their power and remain mindful of the meanings we assign to things.

This principle also has an important connection with peacebuilding. Conflict can sometimes begin when people are divided through labels such as “us” and “them,” “good” and “bad,” or other rigid categories.

When labels become stronger than understanding, division can deepen.

But when language is used with mindfulness, compassion, and respect for human dignity, people can look beyond labels and discover the human reality underneath them.

The Nama Sutta therefore offers a timeless lesson:

Names shape the world we perceive, but wisdom teaches us to look beyond names and understand reality more deeply.
