As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform lifestyles, economies, and international relations at an unprecedented pace, Buddhist scholars are encouraging the global community to revisit the teachings of the Sabbāsava Sutta, an important discourse found in the Majjhima Nikāya, Mūlapaṇṇāsaka of the Sutta Piṭaka. They believe its principles can provide a valuable framework for fostering sustainable peace in the digital age.
The central teaching of the Sabbāsava Sutta focuses on the elimination of “āsavas,” or deeply rooted mental defilements that accumulate within the mind and serve as the underlying causes of suffering, conflict, and harmful behavior. The Buddha taught that true liberation from these defilements can only be achieved through wise reflection and a proper understanding of the Four Noble Truths: suffering, its causes, its cessation, and the path leading to its cessation.
The discourse outlines seven practical methods for preventing and abandoning mental defilements. These include cultivating right understanding, guarding the six sense faculties, using material necessities mindfully and moderately, patiently enduring hardships, avoiding harmful environments, abandoning unwholesome thoughts, and developing the mind through the Seven Factors of Enlightenment (Bojjhaṅgas).
Experts in AI ethics note that these teachings are highly relevant to the challenges of the modern technological age. While AI systems can process information and make decisions with remarkable speed and efficiency, the root causes of social problems remain human greed, hatred, delusion, and prejudice. Without proper wisdom and ethical guidance, technology may amplify these negative tendencies and contribute to wider social and global conflicts.
Practices such as mindful engagement with digital media, careful evaluation of information before accepting or sharing it, responsible use of technology, and continuous cultivation of awareness can help reduce the spread of misinformation, hatred, and social polarization. Likewise, avoiding environments that encourage hostility and division can promote a culture of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Scholars conclude that the Sabbāsava Sutta is not merely a guide for personal spiritual development but also a profound framework for addressing global challenges in the twenty-first century. It demonstrates that genuine peace begins with the purification of the human mind. When individuals learn to overcome prejudice, reduce attachment, and cultivate wisdom, Artificial Intelligence can be directed toward the common good, helping create a more peaceful, just, and sustainable world for future generations.
