[Verse 1]
The world is bound by what we delight,
We chase our desires through day and night.
We think, we want, we reach, we hold,
And turn our hearts into chains of gold.
[Verse 2]
Thought carries the mind along its way,
Following desires from day to day.
The more we cling, the more we fear,
The farther peace seems to disappear.
[Chorus]
Let craving go, release the chain,
Let wisdom wash away the pain.
See every desire with a mindful heart,
Freedom begins when we cease to grasp.
[Verse 3]
Every pleasure rises and fades away,
Every feeling changes with each passing day.
Nothing remains forever the same,
Wisdom sees beyond desire and name.
[Chorus]
Break the bonds with wisdom bright,
Let craving fade, let peace arise.
When we no longer cling or fight,
The heart becomes free, the world finds light.
[Bridge]
Peace does not begin by changing another,
It begins within each sister and brother.
When greed grows less and attachment falls,
Compassion can cross the world's walls.
[Final Chorus]
Let craving go, release the chain,
Let wisdom wash away the pain.
When the heart is free from what it must own,
Peace can grow throughout the world we call home.

The Bandhana Sutta: The World Is Bound by Delight, and Craving Is the Chain That Must Be Abandoned
The Bandhana Sutta, the fifth discourse of its section in the Saṃyutta Nikāya, presents an important teaching on the nature of bondage and liberation.
A deity asks the Buddha:
“What binds the world? What causes the world to move onward? By abandoning what can the bond be completely cut?”
The Buddha answers:
“The world is bound by delight. Thought is what makes the world move onward. By completely abandoning craving, the bond is cut off.”
The teaching points to the relationship between pleasure, thought, craving, and bondage. Human beings become bound not merely by external circumstances, but by the mind’s attachment to things it finds desirable.
When craving arises, the mind begins to pursue, grasp, possess, and protect what it desires. Thoughts then continue to revolve around those desires, creating a cycle that can lead to attachment, conflict, and suffering.
The Buddha’s teaching therefore emphasizes the importance of recognizing craving as it arises. When a person develops mindfulness and wisdom, craving can be observed without immediately being followed.
To abandon craving does not simply mean rejecting every form of happiness. Rather, it means learning not to become a slave to desire—to understand pleasure without clinging to it, to recognize thoughts without being controlled by them, and to cultivate contentment and inner freedom.
This principle can also be applied to modern society. Consumerism, competition, social media, and the constant pursuit of status and possessions can intensify human desires. When desire becomes attachment, individuals and communities may become trapped in cycles of competition and conflict.
The Bandhana Sutta therefore offers a profound message for peacebuilding:
When craving decreases, attachment decreases. When attachment decreases, conflict can diminish. And when the mind becomes free from bondage, peace has room to arise.
True peace, in this sense, begins not with controlling others, but with understanding and transforming the desires within ourselves.
