Bhayabherava Sutta Reveals a Path to Overcoming Fear in the AI Era: Scholars Advocate Mental Development as the Foundation of Global Peace

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform the world at an unprecedented pace, influencing economies, societies, and international security, Buddhist scholars are highlighting the teachings of the Bhayabherava Sutta as a valuable framework for fostering inner stability and global peace in the digital age.

The Bhayabherava Sutta records a dialogue between the Buddha and Jāṇussoṇi Brahmin concerning the nature of fear and how to confront it, particularly in remote and intimidating environments. The Buddha explains that fear does not arise solely from external circumstances; rather, it originates from unwholesome qualities and defilements that remain within the mind. These include impure conduct in body, speech, and thought, mental agitation, doubt, and a lack of concentration.

The Buddha recounts His own experience before enlightenment, when He deliberately dwelt in secluded forests and faced fear directly. Through the cultivation of moral purity, unwavering effort, mindfulness, clear comprehension, and deep concentration, He overcame all fear and ultimately attained the Three Higher Knowledges (Tevijjā) on the night of His enlightenment.

Experts in ethics and technology argue that these teachings are particularly relevant in the AI era, where societies face growing anxieties about job displacement, economic competition, cybersecurity threats, misinformation, and geopolitical tensions related to advanced technologies. Without proper mental discipline, such fears can evolve into suspicion, hostility, division, and even violence.

According to scholars, cultivating mindfulness, ethical responsibility, and inner resilience in accordance with the Bhayabherava Sutta can help individuals respond to technological change with wisdom and composure. Such practices enable people to avoid panic, resist fear-driven narratives, and make decisions grounded in reason, compassion, and understanding.

The discourse also emphasizes that solitude and self-cultivation are not merely personal pursuits. They serve as an example for future generations, demonstrating how mental obstacles and hindrances can be overcome through wisdom, perseverance, and disciplined practice.

Scholars conclude that the Bhayabherava Sutta offers a profound vision for achieving global peace by addressing one of humanity’s deepest challenges: fear itself. When people learn to overcome inner fear while applying technology with ethical awareness and wisdom, the age of Artificial Intelligence can become an era marked by peace, stability, cooperation, and sustainable human progress.
