Anangana Sutta Identifies Self-Awareness of Defilements as the Key to Global Peace: Scholars Propose Inner Development for the AI Era

Anangana Sutta Identifies Self-Awareness of Defilements as the Key to Global Peace: Scholars Propose Inner Development for the AI Era

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to transform human life, economies, and global relationships at an unprecedented pace, Buddhist scholars are advocating the application of teachings from the Anangana Sutta as a framework for building sustainable peace. The discourse emphasizes recognizing and eliminating mental defilements, which are regarded as the root causes of conflict and suffering.

The Anangana Sutta presents a dialogue between Venerable Sāriputta and Venerable Mahā Moggallāna concerning four types of individuals classified according to their mental defilements and level of self-awareness. Venerable Sāriputta explains that the truly noble person is not one who is free from faults from the outset, but one who recognizes personal shortcomings, accepts them honestly, and diligently strives for self-improvement. In contrast, those who ignore or conceal their flaws are likely to experience moral and spiritual decline.

The discourse further defines the term “anangana” in relation to mental blemishes and impurities, particularly unwholesome desires and resentment arising when one fails to receive the recognition, praise, or treatment one expects. If left unchecked, these tendencies can develop into jealousy, hostility, and division at personal, organizational, and societal levels.

To illustrate the importance of mental cultivation, Venerable Sāriputta compares the human mind to a bronze vessel that requires regular polishing and maintenance. If neglected, corrosion and rust gradually diminish its value. Likewise, when greed, hatred, and delusion are allowed to accumulate, they erode personal integrity, social harmony, and lasting peace.

The discourse also includes the analogy of a skilled chariot maker who carefully refines each component until it functions perfectly. This comparison praises those who willingly engage in self-discipline and continuous moral development. Through persistent practice, individuals can transform unwholesome habits into wholesome actions and cultivate lasting positive change.

Experts in AI ethics argue that the teachings of the Anangana Sutta are particularly relevant in the digital age. Despite remarkable technological advances, many of humanity’s greatest challenges continue to stem from bias, excessive ambition, self-centered desire, and a lack of self-awareness. AI systems and algorithms may amplify these weaknesses if developers, leaders, and users fail to recognize and address their own internal biases.

Scholars conclude that the Anangana Sutta offers a profound approach to global peace in the twenty-first century. Genuine peace begins with the courage to acknowledge the truth about one’s own mental defilements. By developing awareness of bias, anger, and craving, individuals can use technology responsibly, act with compassion, and respect the dignity and diversity of others. Such qualities provide a strong foundation for a peaceful, just, and sustainable world in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
