Aṅkaheyya Sutta Inspires AI-Era Global Peace: Morality, Concentration, and Wisdom Identified as Foundations for Humanity’s Future

Amid the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), scholars in Buddhism and technology are drawing inspiration from the Aṅkaheyya Sutta, found in the Majjhima Nikāya of the Sutta Piṭaka, as a framework for promoting global peace and ethical AI development.

The Aṅkaheyya Sutta presents seventeen aspirations that practitioners may wish to achieve and outlines the path toward their fulfillment. The Buddha emphasized that anyone seeking success, prosperity, and liberation from suffering must begin with moral discipline, careful restraint of body, speech, and mind, while continuously cultivating meditation and insight.

Experts note that these teachings are highly relevant to the challenges of the AI era. While AI possesses tremendous potential to benefit humanity, its development without ethical safeguards and social responsibility could contribute to inequality, conflict, and violations of human rights.

According to the sutta, individuals who wish to be respected, loved, and supported by society should cultivate moral integrity together with mental discipline and inner tranquility. In a contemporary context, this principle parallels the development of AI systems that must be transparent, trustworthy, and designed for the common good.

The discourse also discusses overcoming fear, attaining deep meditative absorptions, and developing higher forms of knowledge and extraordinary abilities. Applied to the digital age, these teachings suggest that technology should be used to expand human wisdom, creativity, and problem-solving capacity rather than to intensify competition or destruction.

Peace researchers emphasize that the twenty-first century requires “wisdom-guided technology” rather than innovation alone. Technological progress without ethical foundations may generate global challenges, whereas AI developed with compassion, responsibility, and justice can become a powerful tool for reducing poverty, improving education, advancing healthcare, and fostering understanding among diverse cultures.

The Aṅkaheyya Sutta further teaches that success at every level—from personal well-being and social achievement to ultimate liberation—rests upon the purification of the mind. Consequently, its principles are increasingly viewed as a valuable foundation for cultivating a culture of peace in the age of AI.

Scholars conclude that if humanity can successfully integrate technological innovation with morality, concentration, and wisdom as taught in the Aṅkaheyya Sutta, AI will become more than a tool of progress. It will serve as a transformative force for peace, justice, and sustainable development across the global community.
