Phra Phrommasitthi Leads Thai and International Sangha in Global Vesak Celebration in Geneva, Reflecting Faith and Peace on the UN Stage

Geneva, Swiss Confederation – On April 30, 2026, the Royal Thai Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, in collaboration with the Thai Sangha and international Buddhist organizations, held a ceremony to celebrate Vesak Day, which is recognized as an international day of significance worldwide. The event featured the enshrinement of international Buddhist scriptures, aiming to promote the teachings of Buddhism globally and foster sustainable peace.

The ceremony was graciously led by Phra Phrommasitthi, Abbot of Wat Saket Ratchaworamahawihan, who presided over the monastic rituals. Meanwhile, Ms. Usana Peeranon, Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations in Geneva, served as the lay chairperson.

The event aimed to disseminate the core teachings of Buddhism on an international level, promoting the values of compassion, tolerance, and wisdom—fundamental principles for peaceful coexistence in the global community. It was also dedicated as a royal merit-making offering to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.

The atmosphere of the event was serene and filled with faith, with representatives from various countries in attendance, including Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Bhutan, Laos, Singapore, India, Japan, and China. International monks also participated, including Shi Ming Yi, Secretary-General of the World Buddhist Sangha Council (China), along with members of the European Sangha.

Key activities included the ceremonial enshrinement of Buddhist scriptures from the Bhumibol Bhikkhu Foundation, Dhamma talks, meditation sessions, and a candle-lighting ceremony in homage to the Triple Gem, with prayers dedicated to peace and well-being for humanity.

Vesak Day was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly as an international day on December 15, 1999. It commemorates three significant events in the life of the Buddha: His birth, enlightenment, and passing (Parinirvana). These events embody the principles of compassion, wisdom, and peace.

At the global level, Phra Phrombandit, President of the International Council for Day of Vesak (ICDV), is scheduled to lead a delegation to participate in the “International Vesak Day” celebration from May 26–27, 2026, in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China. The event is expected to attract approximately 1,500 Buddhist participants from around the world.

Additionally, on May 29, 2026, a Vesak celebration will be held at the United Nations office in Thailand, ahead of the official Vesak Day on May 31, 2026.

This event represents another significant platform showcasing Thailand’s role and Buddhism’s contribution on the global stage, reinforcing the power of faith and Dhamma in promoting peace and sustainability for humanity.
