Song: Clear the Inner Jungle Inspired by the Jaṭā Sutta
[Verse 1]
There's a forest deep inside,
Where fear and anger often hide.
Vines of craving wrap the soul,
Keeping hearts from feeling whole.
[Pre-Chorus]
Step by step, the path is clear,
Leave behind illusion and fear.
With every breath, let wisdom grow,
A brighter way begins to show.
[Chorus]
Clear the inner jungle,
Let compassion lead the way.
Cut the vines of hatred,
Welcome every brand-new day.
With virtue, truth, and mindful light,
We turn the darkness into bright.
Peace begins within the soul,
And makes the broken world feel whole.
[Verse 2]
Greed may whisper, pride may call,
But love is stronger than them all.
When the heart is calm and free,
Hope becomes humanity.
[Bridge]
No walls remain, no chains to bind,
When wisdom frees the restless mind.
The path of peace is always there,
For every heart that's willing to care.
[Final Chorus]
Clear the inner jungle,
Let the light of kindness shine.
Hand in hand, we'll heal the nations,
One awakened heart at a time.
When craving fades and truth appears,
We overcome our ancient fears.
Peace will blossom, pure and true,
Beginning first in me and you.
[Outro]
Clear the jungle...
Free the mind...
Plant the seeds...
Of peace for humankind.
English Translation
Jaṭā Sutta: Clearing the Inner Jungle Is the First Step Toward World Peace
The Jaṭā Sutta, recorded in the Samyutta Nikaya of the Pali Canon, teaches that the world's confusion does not arise only from external circumstances but also from the tangled "inner jungle" of greed, hatred, and delusion. The Buddha explains that lasting peace begins by clearing this inner confusion through ethical living, mental cultivation, and wisdom.
The discourse begins with a deva asking the Buddha why all beings appear trapped in both inner and outer entanglements and who is capable of clearing this tangled jungle.
The Buddha replies that a wise person who is firmly established in morality (sīla), develops the mind through meditation, cultivates wisdom, and perseveres diligently is able to cut through these entanglements.
He further explains that when greed, hatred, and ignorance are abandoned, craving—the force that binds beings to suffering—is completely uprooted. Attachment to name and form, as well as perceptions that give rise to conflict and hostility, comes to an end. In that freedom, the inner knots of suffering are untied.
Applied to world peace, the Jaṭā Sutta teaches that conflicts within families, communities, nations, and the international community often arise from the tangled conditions of the human mind—selfish desire, anger, prejudice, fear, and ignorance.
Therefore, building lasting peace requires more than diplomacy, legislation, or economic development. It also demands the cultivation of ethical conduct, mindfulness, meditation, and wisdom so that individuals and societies can recognize reality clearly and resolve conflicts at their roots.
Peace scholars observe that the Jaṭā Sutta closely aligns with the modern concept of Positive Peace, which emphasizes justice, mutual understanding, human development, and inner transformation rather than merely the absence of war.
The timeless message of the Jaṭā Sutta is clear: to untangle the conflicts of the world, humanity must first untangle the conflicts within the human heart. When greed, hatred, and delusion diminish, compassion, wisdom, and cooperation naturally flourish, creating the foundation for enduring world peace.
