Song: The Greatest Is Virtue Inspired by the Khattiya Sutta

[Verse 1]

Crowns may shine and kingdoms grow,

But wisdom is the light we know.
Power fades like setting sun,
Kindness lives in everyone.

[Pre-Chorus]

Birth and titles cannot stay,
Truth will never fade away.
Hearts that serve with selfless grace,
Build a peaceful human race.

[Chorus]

Greatness lives in what we do,
Not in wealth or fame we knew.
Walk with courage, walk with care,
Peace begins when hearts can share.

Hand in hand the nations stand,
Building hope across the land.
Through compassion we shall see,
One united family.

[Verse 2]

Leaders strong through humble hearts,
Healing wounds where conflict starts.
Every child and every soul,
Love will make the broken whole.

[Bridge]

Wisdom guides the path ahead,
Replacing fear and hate with hope instead.
Serving others day by day,
Lights the world's enduring way.

[Final Chorus]

Let our virtues brightly shine,
Greater far than power or pride.
Walking gently, standing tall,
Peace and justice bless us all.

One world rising, side by side,
Truth and kindness as our guide.
Together we can clearly see,

Virtue builds humanity.

Khattiya Sutta: True Nobility Comes from Virtue, Not Status — A Buddhist Vision for World Peace

Sāvatthī – The Khattiya Sutta, found in the Saṃyutta Nikāya (Book 15 of the Pāli Canon), presents an insightful dialogue between a deity and the Buddha concerning what is considered "the highest." The Buddha's response reveals that true excellence is measured by wisdom, virtue, and righteous conduct—not by birth, rank, or social position.

In the discourse, a deity declares:

"Among two-footed beings, the king is supreme.
Among four-footed animals, the cow is supreme.
Among wives, a maiden is supreme.
Among sons, the firstborn is supreme."

These verses reflect the traditional social values of the time, emphasizing rank, lineage, and seniority.

The Buddha then offers a deeper perspective:

"Among two-footed beings, the Fully Enlightened Buddha is supreme.
Among four-footed animals, the noble thoroughbred is supreme.
Among wives, she who faithfully supports her family is supreme."

Although the excerpt ends here, the essential teaching emphasizes that true greatness arises from wisdom, moral excellence, discipline, and devoted action, rather than inherited privilege.

Buddhist scholars explain that the Buddha is honored not because of worldly power, but because He attained perfect enlightenment and dedicated His life to the welfare of all beings. Likewise, the noble thoroughbred symbolizes disciplined training, strength of character, and readiness to serve.

Regarding family life, the teaching highlights that the highest value in marriage lies in mutual care, responsibility, loyalty, and moral support, rather than outward appearances or social status.

Peace researchers suggest that the Khattiya Sutta provides valuable principles for building world peace. Leaders who cultivate wisdom, ethical conduct, humility, and service inspire trust and cooperation instead of fear and conflict.

In an era marked by geopolitical rivalry, inequality, and identity-based conflicts, the Buddha's teaching reminds humanity that true nobility comes from character rather than status. This perspective encourages equality, mutual respect, and peaceful collaboration among nations.

Scholars conclude that the Khattiya Sutta offers not only a lesson on personal virtue but also an ethical model for global leadership, showing that lasting peace is built by those who serve others with wisdom, compassion, and integrity.
