Song: Free from Every Chain Inspired by the Kutikā Sutta

[Verse 1]

No house can hold a peaceful soul,
No chains can bind a heart made whole.
Love with wisdom, not with greed,
Planting hope in every deed.

[Pre-Chorus]

What we cling to fades away,
Like the night before the day.
Open hearts and gently see,
Truth is found in being free.

[Chorus]

Break the chains of fear and pride,
Let compassion be our guide.
Nothing owned, yet rich in peace,
Every conflict finds release.

Hand in hand the nations stand,
Building hope across the land.
When our hearts are truly free,
The world lives in harmony.

[Verse 2]

Not possessions, not our name,
Not the wealth or worldly fame.
Only kindness will remain,
Healing every wound and pain.

[Bridge]

Craving falls like autumn leaves,
Hope is born when hatred leaves.
Every soul can choose the way,
Toward a brighter, peaceful day.

[Final Chorus]

Free from every binding chain,
Love will bloom like gentle rain.
Walking with the Dhamma's light,
Turning darkness into bright.

One humanity shall rise,
Under clear and peaceful skies.
Through compassion we shall see,

A world forever living free.

Kutikā Sutta: Freedom from Craving—The Key to Lasting World Peace

Sāvatthī – The Kutikā Sutta, recorded in the Saṃyutta Nikāya (Book 15 of the Pāli Canon), presents a profound teaching on freedom from attachment and craving. Buddhist scholars believe this discourse offers timeless guidance for building lasting world peace by addressing the inner causes of conflict.

In the discourse, a deity asks the Buddha:

"Do you have no hut? No nest? No continuation? Have you become free from every bond?"

The Buddha replies:

"Indeed, I have no hut. Indeed, I have no nest. Indeed, I have no continuation. Indeed, I am free from every bond."

When asked to explain these symbolic expressions, the Buddha clarifies:

  • Mother is compared to a "hut."
  • Wife is compared to a "nest."
  • Children represent "continuation."
  • Craving (taṇhā) is the true "bond" that binds beings.

The deity then praises the Buddha for having completely transcended these bonds.

Scholars explain that the Buddha is not rejecting family life or social responsibility. Rather, he teaches that suffering arises not from relationships themselves, but from attachment, possessiveness, and craving.

Peace researchers suggest that the Kutikā Sutta provides practical guidance for world peace by encouraging individuals, communities, and nations to reduce excessive attachment to power, wealth, identity, and self-interest, replacing them with wisdom, compassion, and cooperation.

Many global conflicts—including wars, political divisions, economic competition, and disputes over resources—are rooted in craving, greed, and ego. By reducing attachment and cultivating generosity and mutual respect, societies can move toward peaceful coexistence.

The discourse also reminds humanity that true freedom does not come from possessing everything, but from no longer being possessed by craving. A liberated mind naturally gives rise to peace, stability, and genuine happiness.

Scholars conclude that the Kutikā Sutta offers a timeless message for today's world: lasting peace begins when people free themselves from the bonds of craving and transform attachment into wisdom, compassion, and shared responsibility.
